Keys/ Access Control
Advances in modern technology have provided a great opportunity to prevent unauthorised access to buildings and rooms and ultimately improve security. With the use of the WITCARD this allows the Estates office to control access to designated rooms, research areas and buildings. The Institute currently has two systems of access control, the WITCARD and keys.
The Estates Office keeps a record of all keys used at the Institute. If you require a key for your office you must visit the Estates Office. This is neccessary as keys must be signed for.
In addition the Estates Office can obtain keys for desks, pedestals, filing cabinets etc.
WITCARD Access
As part of the overall security strategy for the Institute the use of passive security such as card controlled access systems will increase. The times for open or restricted access are decided by the Estates Manager in conjunction with the Head of Department/Function.
The Head of Department should supply a list of Staff and/or students who require access to the area and proposed times of access.
The Estates Manager reserves the right to approve/refuse or ask for further justification for requests for access to certain areas.
This information is collated by Estates and sent to the WITCard office accompanied by written authorisation from the Estates Manager requesting programming of WITCard for access.
NO CARDS WILL BE PROGRAMMED UNLESS WRITTEN AUTHORISATION HAS BEEN SENT BY THE ESTATES OFFICE.
Individual requests for access to areas will not be accepted by the Estates Office. The request must be supported by written confirmation from the Head of Department. The final decision on times and who is granted access remains with the Estates Office.
