Mónica Ramírez, from Mexico City, a student on the MSc in Computing (Information Systems Processes), was the recipient of the prestigious Irish and Mexican government scholarship to Ireland for this year. Mónica, a graduate of the Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City, holds a BSc in Computer Systems Engineering and worked for General Motors in Mexico for 5 years before coming to WIT.
Mónica contemplated pursuing a postgraduate course in Computing at various universities in the UK and the Netherlands amongst other countries, but WIT particularly stood out for her due to its range of one-year Masters programmes in Computing, its modern campus with accommodation and of course the reputation that Ireland has as a fun and dynamic destination. Mónica says that one of the main reasons why she decided to come to WIT is that ‘the culture and lifestyle in Ireland are more similar to that of Mexico than other countries ’.
Mónica is very pleased with her decision to come to Waterford and says that she has found it very easy to integrate into student life at the Institute. Events like the coffee mornings for Latin American students, organised by Don O’Neill of the International Office, day trips, Christmas celebrations, and Chinese New Year, have all helped her to settle into life here. She has made friends not just with Irish students but with students from countries as diverse as Brazil, Chile and China, making her experience here a truly international one.
With regard to her studies, Mónica says that the MSc programme is fulfilling all her expectations. In particular, she says she is learning from the dissertation process which, she adds, is ‘both challenging and rewarding’. Mónica was selected to represent the Institute at the Enterprise Ireland ‘Student Enterprise Awards 2009’ competition. Under the guidance of lecturer, John Maher, she will present work carried out as part of a team project prepared for the module on
Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Dr Venie Martin, WIT’s, Head of Development , says that ‘it is wonderful to see scholarship students who truly excel in their field – such as Mónica - choose WIT and it is all the more heartening to hear how enjoyable the experience is proving to be for her’.
