Waterford Institute of Technology honours high-achieving first year students

A group of 12 high-achieving first year students have been awarded the Director’s Merit Prize at Waterford Institute of Technology.

Selected for recognition on the basis of the CAO points they secured in their Leaving Certificate, the students are now pursuing undergraduate programmes at the Institute.

Among the three Waterford students honoured was Victoria Davies from Grantstown Village in the city who sat her Leaving Certificate at St Angela’s, Ursuline Convent, Waterford and is now pursuing the BSc (Hons) in General Nursing.

Also recognised was Sarah Chaloner, Lismore Park, Waterford who completed the Leaving Certificate at Scoil Mhuire, Béal Áthan Ghaorthaidh and is now studying for a BA (Hons) in Psychology.

Victoria and Sarah were joined by John Egan, a former student at De La Salle College in Waterford who lives at Lower Newtown in the city. John is now working towards a BSc in Architecture.

The other nine students whose high achievement in the Leaving Certificate prior to entering Waterford Institute of Technology were honoured this week were Jonathon Butler, Kilmacow, Co Kilkenny; Cathy Kavanagh, Bunclody, Co Wexford; Curtis Cassely, Duleek, Co Meath; Tara Maxwell, Birr, Co Offaly; Mary Treacy, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny; Rebecca O’Donnell, Thurles, Co Tipperary; Clare Kennedy, Kilmoganny, Co Kilkenny; Eoghan Lynch, Kilfenora, Co Clare and Valerie O’Leary, Glanmire, Co Cork.

Congratulating the students, Derek O’Byrne, Registrar, Waterford Institute of Technology commented, “Amid growing economic uncertainty, these tremendously talented and hardworking young people give cause for great optimism about the future. Their schools and, perhaps most importantly, their families can be immensely proud of their achievements to date and as an Institute we look forward to working in partnership with these students to help chart their course to successful careers and rewarding lives.

“We are very proud to award these high-achievers and especially pleased that they have chosen to continue their education at Waterford Institute of Technology. It is right that we honour achievement and excellence among our learning community.”
