World-beating WIT postgraduate opportunities on your doorstep
Posted: Thu, June 18, 2009

In line with its philosophy of providing world-class postgraduate opportunities at regional level, Waterford Institute of Technology has published an impressive guide to the more than 40 programmes at PhD and Masters level aimed at encouraging people from the southeast to explore the exciting academic possibilities available on their doorsteps.  WIT believes ‘You shouldn’t have to travel too far to go a long way.’

“We recently published our postgraduate prospectus, which is the first place to begin the search for postgraduate study opportunities,” says Angela Power, Postgraduate Coordinator, Postgraduate Support Unit at WIT.  “It is hoped that this publication will encourage people to seriously consider WIT as their postgraduate destination. The new prospectus describes the exciting range of opportunities at Masters and PhD level at WIT.  At present there are approximately 40 taught postgraduate programmes in areas as diverse as Business, Education, Computing, Electronics, Language Teaching and Sports Psychology.  More than 37 research groups are active in WIT and many of these recruit students to work for higher degrees by research and thesis.”

What makes Waterford Institute of Technology unique when it comes to postgraduate study?
The great range of courses, the dedication of the academic community to their students. Perhaps it’s the friendly atmosphere when you step through the front doors. “WIT truly is a community, where staff and students alike tend to know each other’s names and say hello in the hallways. Campus life is friendly, relaxed - except perhaps around exam
time - and social with small classroom teaching helping students to learn quicker and integrate faster.

The prospectus includes profiles of some current postgraduate students from Masters and PhD programmes.  Waterford student, Louise Murphy, who is studying for a Research Masters in Nursing on the topic of cancer fatigue, says: "I am glad I chose WIT to pursue my postgraduate qualification.  The support and encouragement I received from colleagues in the Departments of Nursing and Science was invaluable and very much appreciated. Undertaking postgraduate research is to progress from merely learning knowledge to actively contributing to the body of knowledge in your area of research."

According to Larry Fitzhenry, a Research Masters student, from Wexford: “I have a great interest in my research area and enjoy both the practical and the literature-based side of the project. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with two universities in the UK and travel to Japan for an international conference while at the same time enjoying a pleasant working environment due to the large number of postgraduates here in WIT.”  Larry came to WIT as a mature student having previously been in the army.  He has progressed from certificate, to diploma, to degree and is now undertaking a Masters by Research in Science.

There is also an increasing cohort of people in employment undertaking Masters and PhD in part-time mode.  Fiona Mc Hardy from Kilkenny is a part-time taught postgraduate student in Construction Project Management at WIT and says: “Lecturers are very conscious of keeping the class material interesting and will often discuss current issues, which are
relevant to our industry. This enables us to apply theoretical learning in our every day working environment.”

WIT has been top of the Sunday Times University League Table for graduate employment in 2007 and has been educating achievers for more than 35 years.  WIT has invested heavily in its facilities to students over the last number ofyears. The college has four sites in Waterford City – the premier Cork Road Campus, College Street Campus, Applied Technology Campus and the150-acre Carriganore Campus.  Recent developments have included the Tourism & Leisure Building (2008), the WIT Corporate Headquarters (2006), the Health Sciences/Nurse Education Building, (2005), St.Dominic’s building complex (2005), ArcLab Research & Innovation Centre(2005), Walton IT Building (2003), Student Restaurant & Gallery (2004) and the Luke Wadding Library (2000).  The Architectural StudiesBuilding, Engineering & Science Building, Business & Enterprise Building and Student Services Building are projected to be complete by 2010.
