New Course - MSc in Science Education (Primary Science)

MSc in Science Education (Primary Science) – 90 level 9 Credits

Applications are invited for the full-time MSc in Science Education (Primary Science), which aims provide prospective primary teachers with specialist knowledge in primary science education. This course offers participants an opportunity to gain a theoretical and critical perspective of science education and to reflect on their professional practice. This course is informed by and addresses national and international developments in primary science education and CALMAST (Centre for the Advancement of Learning of Maths, Science and Technology).

Course Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the scientific principles underpinning the four strands of the primary science curriculum;
  • show an ability to develop appropriate activities to demonstrate the scientific principles underpinning the four teaching strands;
  • apply knowledge and understanding of how children learn and think about science to plan relevant learning experiences;
  • critically evaluate the provision of science within a school;
  • develop a school plan for the provision of science within a primary school;
  • critically evaluate current practice of science education;
  • conduct an extended investigation into a relevant aspect of theory or practice;
