Sporting successes abound for WIT Posted: Mon, November 9, 2009 |
There has been recent success for the Institute's sporting teams as well as individual honours for both our current students as well as WIT alumni.
The WIT Handball Club recently enjoyed a fantastic result at the All Ireland 60x30 Colleges Intervarsity, the team made up of Nicholas Anthony, Ger McGrath, Patrick Funchion and Noel Holohan secured the Men's A Team title. This was the very first time WIT has ever secured this prestigious title.
In the individual events, Nicholas Anthony claimed the 60x30 individual "A" title, beating World Champion Shane Hedigan from IT Tralee in the final. Noel Holohan rounded off a great weekend for WIT handball when he claimed the "B" title following some strong performances along the way.
The Fresher Camogie team also claimed All Ireland glory for WIT when they won the Colleges Fresher 7 a side All Ireland title in Galway last Tuesday. WIT saw off all comers last week to reclaim the title last won in 2004 by WIT to emphasise the strength of camogie in the Institute at present.
At the recent All Star Awards in both camogie and hurling WIT students, both past and present, were honoured. Henry Shefflin of Kilkenny and Waterford's Michael "Brick" Walsh, both WIT Business School graduates, were awarded All Stars for their sterling performances for their respective counties over the course of 2009 inter county season.
Not to be outdone the WIT Camogie Club also had 2 winners, current students Ann Dalton and Katie Power (both Kilkenny) received All Stars while Denise Gaule (also Kilkenny) claimed the Young Player of the Year Award. WIT were well represented at the ceremony with a further 3 players with WIT connections nominated for All Stars. Current students Katrina Parrock and Colette Dormer were joined by former student and the present WIT GAA Club PRO, Kate Kelly. In the Soaring Stars section of the camogie awards, Waterford's Karen Kelly (a 2nd year student here in the Institute), was rewarded for her impressive performances through the year.
Well done to all on their achievements!
