Applications are now open for two new honours degree courses: One in Sustainable Energy Engineering and one in Business With Irish

Waterford Institute of Technology is now inviting direct applications for two new programmes to begin in September 2010. The two courses are the Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Sustainable Energy Engineering (Hons) and the Bachelor of Business (Hons) with Irish.

“Sustainable energy is a key strategic priority for Government at present and is one of the major potential areas for growth in the economy,” said WIT Registrar Dr Derek O’Byrne. “We are delighted to be able to offer students the opportunity of taking a four year honours degree in this field and to be part of a rapidly developing industry.”

“We are also pleased to extend the range of languages on offer in our business programmes and to give the opportunity for students to continue with their Irish Studies as a dedicated language component of one of our most popular courses,” said the Registrar.

BEng (Hons) in Sustainable Energy Engineering

The new BEng (Hons) in Sustainable Energy Engineering programme is a four year undergraduate course with first year entry open to school leavers or others who meet the required entry standards. The programme is focused on investigating energy and its uses in areas such as sustainable low energy building design, building energy performance and analysis, energy production, low and zero carbon heat and power generation technologies, and energy policy and legislation. Graduates from this programme will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career within the energy sector either in Ireland or abroad.

The Bachelor of Business (Hons) with Irish

The Bachelor of Business with Irish -  an official working language of the EU since 2007 - is a new full-time four year honours degree programme. Building on the Bachelor of Business programme which has been running for over 25 years this new programme allows the student include Irish as part of the programme choice. Students will study general business subjects and Irish throughout the course and in the final two years will choose a specialty from:  Marketing, Accounting, Human Resource Management, Economics and Finance and Management. In addition students will get the opportunity to study abroad. There are many opportunities for graduates who have a competency in Irish. Since the passing of the Official Languages Act (2003) many government offices require people who are fluent Irish speakers and writers.
