Overview of WIT Research & Knowledge Strategy

Waterford Institute of Technology is dedicated to supporting the creation of a knowledge society by leading the South East region in building the appropriate research infrastructure necessary to create unique centres of research, development and innovation. The Institute is committed to attracting resources and investment from right around the globe.

Fostering a research culture and supporting a research continuum from blue skies research to commercialization is one of the core dimensions of the Institute’s research philosophy.  WIT continues to attract external research funding; with the highest level of funding secured in the academic year 2007 - 2008 which reached in excess of €22.6m.

Emanating from this increase in research investment and commercialisation activity, WIT has an established research support infrastructure including the Research Support Unit providing support for staff, students and partners and the Technology Transfer Office, which is committed to strengthening the technology transfer resources and expertise available to WIT researchers and industry collaborators.

Complementing this research culture, WIT has developed a model for structuring research within the institute that divides research into four core groups:

  • Centre of excellence;
  • Interdisciplinary research clusters;
  • Research groups;
  • Self-tasked researchers.

The key priorities in the Research & Knowledge Transfer Strategy are outlined in WIT's Strategic Plan 2007-2010.
