Welcome to the Office of the Head of Research & Innovation
The introduction of a strategic and targeted approach to the development of research within the Institute through the creation of the Office of the Head of Research & Innovation has resulted in major growth in the level and quality of the research produced by the Institute.
The Institute’s research activity is clustered around areas of strategic importance for Ireland and the region, which maximizes the return on research investment from the funding agencies. The quality of research undertaken at WIT is verified by the fact that during the last academic year 2008-2009 the Institute secured more than €15.2 million in research funding.
The Institute is committed to ensuring that investment in research is translated in delivering high quality postgraduate education, high impact publications and benefiting economic development through job creation and product/services innovation in the region. Transfer of knowledge from higher education institutes into the market place has been recognized as a key priority in the Government’s National Development Plan 2007-2013, in the Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (SSTI) 2006 - 2013, and, in Building Ireland’s Smart Economy: A Framework for Sustainable Economic Renewal, 2008. The Office of Research & Innovation will continue to align its research strategy to ensure such priorities are realised.
