Mr. Ger Long, Head of Department of Accounting and Economics, WIT

Welcome to the Department of Accounting and Economics. Our Department's focus is to prepare our students for the challenging and fast-changing world of business with particular emphasis on the financial sector. Our goal is to provide students with an in-depth knowledge in the key business areas and, also, to prepare our students to become confident professionals in the workplace. We offer courses at Higher Certificate (level 6), Degree (level 7), and Honours Degree (level 8), and at research Masters and PhD levels.

The Department offers 3 honours degrees and 2 additional courses (Accountancy, and Economics & Finance) that are part of the Bachelor of Business run by the Department of Management & Organisation. The BA (Honours) in Accounting is a three year programme that prepares students for a career in accountancy. Our BA (Honours) in Business Management & Law is a three year programme that prepares students for a career in the corporate sector with a particular emphasis on matters of legal compliance and governance. This area involves the study of such subjects as business and company law, accountancy, taxation and finance. The department also offers a three year BA (Honours) in Finance & Investment, which seeks to prepare students for careers in finance, banking and related disciplines.

At Level 7, the department offers the Bachelor of Business award. This can be taken on an ab initio basis, or as a one-year add-on to the Higher Certificate in Business. Both these programmes are broadly based and provide students with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in business.

The department also offers two specially developed two-year add-on degrees at level 8 which are available to students on completion of the Higher Certificate in Business. These are the BA (Honours) in Business Information Systems and the BA (Honours) in Financial Services. These courses prepare students for careers in the application of management and information systems and in the financial services sector respectively.
