WIT Policy on Exemptions

If a person believes that they have covered a subject on a previous course and can meet at least 50% of the learning outcomes identified on the module descriptor (in the WIT Student Handbook) they can send in a written request for an exemption giving details of:

1. The module in respect of which an exemption is being applied for
2. Details of the course they have completed and copies of any qualifications previously attained in the subject area.

This will be reviewed by WIT (using the learning outcomes) and a decision made and communicated to the participant.

As a general guideline if someone is applying for an exemption for a particular module, their previous studies should be at the same level or higher to qualify for an exemption (ie Higher Certificate level or above).

WIT Policy on APEL

A person may apply for APEL (Accreditation of Experiential Prior Learning) when they believe they have significant experience in a subject area in which they have no previous academic qualifications.

WIT allows people to APEL Literacy Methodologies 1& 2 and a small number of other modules.

If a person applies to APEL a module, WIT usually requires them to attend an APEL workshop where they learn how to put together an APEL portfolio. They then complete the portfolio and submit this to WIT.

If the assessor agrees that they have met the learning outcomes through what is produced in the portfolio they are granted an exemption from that module.
