Welcome to the School of Health Sciences

Introduction
In the School of Health Sciences, we provide education in the areas of nursing, health, sport and exercise for about 1,300 undergraduate students and a growing number of postgraduates. We also carry out research and development in these areas. 63 members of staff support the school's work.

The School has two departments:

  • The Department of Nursing offers courses leading to registration as general, psychiatric and intellectual disability nurses, and courses for already-qualified nurses. The department represents Irish nurse education in the European Tuning project. Research in the Department of Nursing includes analysis of fatigue in women cancer survivors and exploring multiple intelligences.
  • The Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences offers undergraduate courses in recreation and leisure, health promotion, exercise and health, and an MA in sports psychology. Staff in the Department carry out research in many areas, including analysis of health behaviour patterns, the effect of exercise on metabolism and alcohol consumption among students in sporting clubs.
