Applying for a WIT Sports Scholarship

Any prospective or current WIT student can apply for a sports scholarship and have their application considered; a condition of receiving a scholarship is that the applicant must be on or accepted onto a full time course in WIT.

Once the Scholarship Committee has received all of the applicant’s relevant information, the applicant is then marked on their achievements in their particular sport. The applicant’s commitment to their WIT Sports Club in their first few months in college is also taken into account. First time Scholarships are generally awarded around the end of November, however they can be awarded to exceptional athletes before they receive their CAO results, but this is only in exceptional circumstances and is dependent upon theapplicant being accepted on a full time WIT course.

Most Sport Scholarships are awarded at the Bronze level, with an opportunity for all recipients to move on to Silver and Gold levels. In exceptional circumstances Scholarships can be awarded at the Silver or Gold levels without the applicant having received the Bronze award.

Bronze:

Bronze Scholarships are open to all sports and are generally given to prospective and new students on entry to WIT. This sports scholarship is also available to students who have completed first year in college and have demonstrated above average potential and commitment to a WIT sports club.

The recipient will receive financial support in addition to the extensive support services in year one. Based on an assessment of their contribution to their sport/club after year one, the recipient will again receive more financial support in year two along with all the support services.

At the end of year two recipients can apply to advance to the next level, which is a Silver Scholarship. Again, this will be based on their contribution to their sport and the WIT club. If unsuccessful, the student can stay in the Scholarship Programme and still access all support services, which are quite substantial, but will not receive any additional financial funding. After year 3, the student can reapply for a Silver Scholarship.

Silver:

Students can apply for a Silver Scholarship at the start of their 3rd year in college. These students will generally have received a Bronze scholarship, but will also be made available to students who have excelled in their sport in their two years in college, but were not on the Scholarship Programme.

Students receiving Silver scholarships will have demonstrated their potential & commitment to their sport and the WIT club and will be competing at a high level. The recipient will receive financial support in addition to all of the support services available within the scholarship programme.

Gold:

Students can apply for a Gold Scholarship at the start of their 4th year in college. These students will generally have received a Silver level scholarship, but will also be made available to students who have excelled in their sport in their three years in college, but are not in the Scholarship Programme.

Students receiving Gold scholarships will have demonstrated their potential & commitment to their sport and WIT club and should have the potential to compete at an even higher level. The recipient will receive financial support in addition to all of the support services available within the scholarship programme.

Support Services

  Academic Support

The WIT Athletic Performance Coordinator will meet all scholarship students on an individual basis as least once a month in relation to their academic studies and their general scholarship duties. Based on the outcome of these meetings, intervention strategies such as academic supports can be put in place if the student is struggling academically.

  Strength and Conditioning

All students on the Scholarship scheme will have free access to the WIT Fitness Suite and the Waterford Crystal Gym, Pool, Steam and Sauna areas. The scholarship student will also have access to a suitably qualified person who will devise strength and conditioning programmes relevant to their particular Sport.

Sports Science Support-access to nutrition, psychology etc

As part of the Scholarship support services all Scholarship recipients can avail of nutritional advice from our nutritionist and can also access our Sports Psychologist who will discuss issues such as time management, goal setting, lifestyle advice etc.

Technical Support

The Sport and Recreation Office will ensure that all of our scholarship recipients benefit from a level of coaching specific to their needs. Ideally this will come through the club coaching structure within the Institute, however, in sports where this was not possible the scholarship package will provide some specialist individual coaching. Examples would include high achieving individuals in specific sports such as Sailing, Golf or Equestrian, who could avail of funding towards a specific training weekend.

Medical

All Scholarship recipients will have free access to the medical centre on campus which includes Doctors visits.

Athletic Performance Module

All 1st year sport scholarship students gain a place on the athletic performance module. The athletic performance module provides the student with the necessary skills to enhance their athletic potential while attending college and pursuing their academic programme. Following the completion of the module, participants will be leaders in WIT within their respective sports and at the forefront of their respective sports at a national level. The athletic performance module provides students with the relevant tools to enable them to balance their sporting and academic commitments and achieve excellence in each.
