What is the Higher Certificate in Business in Tourism?
This course is a two year full-time programme, which will provide students with the core abilities to succeed in a variety of positions within the tourism and travel industry.
The subject of tourism is concerned with the movement of people, usually for leisure or business but increasingly for education, health or other purposes and how people and resources interact as the travel process takes place. It is also concerned with the impact tourism has on communities and in the management of that industry in order to maximise positive benefits.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Higher Certificate in Business in Toursim with suitable post-qualification experience may reasonably expect to work as:
- Travel Advisers and Agents
- Ground Crew and Reservations Personnel in the aviation industry
- Tourist Information Officers
- Tour Representatives
- Guides in Visitor Attractions
- Customer Relations and Administrative Personnel in a variety of tourism-related organisations
Follow on Study
Direct entry onto other tourism-related programmes might be possible subject to grade and minimum criteria being accepted, e.g. BA (Hons) in Tourism Marketing.
Special Features of the Course
An integral feature of this course is a period of work placement during the summer between year one and two. In year two you will also have the opportunity to specialise in two subjects, Guiding or Travel Trade Operations.

Course Entry
Minimum Entry Requirements:
•5 Leaving Certificate Ordinary D3’s or an equivalent qualification (English must be included in the subjects passed)
•FETAC Level 5 in any discipline.
•RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) will be considered where applicants can demonstrate sufficient learning gained in a relevant work-based context.
•The Leaving Certificate Applied programme does not meet minimum entry requirements. However, learners with a post qualification level 5 award or with appropriate work based learning are eligible to apply.
•Mature applicants must be 23 yrs by 1st of January on year of application.
*Note - Fáilte Ireland will pay the €1,500 registration fee on this course for successful applicants
