 What is Construction Management & Engineering?

Construction Management & Engineering prepares students for responsible engineering and management roles in all phases of construction projects.  It emphasises management, engineering and technological techniques useful in organising, planning and controlling the activities of diverse specialists working in the project environment of the Irish and international construction industry.

What is the BSc (Hons) in Construction Management & Engineering?

The BSc (Hons) in Construction Management & Engineering is a four year course that prepares graduates for a career as professional construction managers and engineers in the Irish and worldwide construction industry.

The programme is accredited by the CIOB and currently under review by Engineers Ireland.

BSc (Hons) in Construction Management & Engineering industrial placement

Each student is required to complete a 30-week paid industrial placement with a construction company in the second period (February to September) of the third year.  The companies comprise general contractors in civil engineering, building and residential property, project management companies, specialist contractors, engineering design offices and materials manufacturers.

The CME Programme

The CME programme prepares students for a variety of exciting career opportunities in project management and engineering roles across the global construction sector.  Many of our graduates work with some of the best Irish and international construction companies including: Turner Construction, John Sisk & Son, BAM Contractors, Clancy Construction, the PM Group, Duggan Brothers, PJ Hegarty, Walls Construction, McLaren Construction, Laing O'Rourke, Murphy Group, JT Magen, Reidy Contracting Group and Bennett Construction amongst others.

Work Placement

Students are required to complete a 7 month Industrial Placement during year 3 of the programme.  Gaining hands-on experience in the construction industry is integral to the students developing an understanding of the complexity of construction & civil engineering projects. 

SETU Waterford organises the placement with excellent companies on exciting projects in Ireland, the United Kingdom, New York City and further afield!  In many cases, the placement leads to full-time employment upon graduation.

Projects

Michel Wolf worked for Turner Construction for his work placement in 2013 on the refurbishment of the iconic Madison Square Garden arena in New York City.  Home to the New York Knicks and Rangers, the project cost of in excess of $1 billion, and was successfully completed to a very tight schedule.

CIOB Presidents Medal

The Chartered Institute of Building is the leading professional body for representing Construction Managers.  Every year, the CIOB's president awards their medal to the student who has excelled in their studies on the Construction Management & Engineering programme.  In 2014, the recipient of the medal was David Whitty, who is currently employed by Sisk on their 4 year Excelerate Graduate Development programme.

Sisk Award for Dissertation

SiskThe final year dissertation affords students the opportunity to explore a topic of personal and professional interest.  Ireland largest building and civil engineering contractor, John Sisk & Son Ltd., sponsor the awards for Excellence in Project Management & Research for students on the BSc (Hons) Construction Management & Engineering programme.  The winners for 2014 included:

1st - Claire Kilrane - Why Mega Projects Fail
2nd - Michel Wolf - BIM for M&E Co-Ordination
3rd - Jeremiah O'Connor - Reducing Water Wastage in Ireland

Clancy Construction Industry Award

Tipperary-based construction company, Clancy Construction, presented their annual Industry Awards to final year students of the BSc (Hons) in Construction Management & Engineering programme.  The awards acknowledge excellent performance during the seven month Industrial Placement, which forms an integral part of the student’s education and prepares them for their careers in the global construction sector.  The winner of the award was Michel Wolf with Alan Sherlock and Shane O’Neill the runners-up.  Michel worked for Turner Construction on the refurbishment of the iconic Madison Square Garden arena in New York City.  Home to the New York Knicks and Rangers, the project cost of in excess of $1 billion, and was successfully completed to a very tight schedule.  Alan worked with NRW Civil& Mining on a large-scale mining project in Western Australia, while Shane spent his placement with the Murphy Group on civil engineering projects in both London and Glasgow.
