The Childhood Cancer Foundation runs the Light It Up Gold Campaign for childhood cancer awareness every September. Waterford Institute of Technology is holding a series of events to support this worthy campaign as well as increasing awareness of a great charity and a terrible disease.
The Childhood Cancer Foundation is a charity close to the hearts of WIT staff as unfortunately, three mothers working in WIT have had children diagnosed with cancer in the past three years.
WIT is helping create awareness with:
Gold banners on our website (www.wit.ie) and our online learning platform (http://moodle.wit.ie).
All digital signage in the college (i.e. large plasma TVs throughout the college) are running a set of PowerPoint slides developed to raise awareness for childhood cancer.
To support our colleagues and this great initiative, staff and students can get involved in the following ways:
Golden Moments Afternoon Tea:
A staff and students tea break on Tuesday, 29 September from 3pm to 4pm in the Tourism & Leisure Education BuildingStudents from the Department of Nursing and Healthcare will have a stand at the Afternoon Tea and will provide information on Childhood Cancer”.

Understanding childhood cancer
Over 200 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Ireland. That’s four families each week who hear the devastating news that their child, brother, sister or grandchild has cancer. Childhood cancer is the biggest cause of death by disease in children in Ireland and research in this area is critically underfunded. The Childhood Cancer Foundation is committed to raising public awareness of the issues surrounding childhood cancer, developing early diagnosis programmes amongst health care professionals, advocating for improved services for children affected by cancer and assisting to fund vital services for children and families affected by this disease.
