Research Statement

My research interests include FinTech, Blockchain, Data Modelling and Analytics, and Social Media Management. My research has been published in several journals including the the International Journal of Information Management (IJIM), Information Systems Journal (ISJ), Electronic Markets (EM), Behaviour and Information Technology (BIT), and the VINE Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems. Furthermore, my work has been presented and published in the proceedings at IS and Management conferences around the world including ICIS, ECIS, ACIS, IFIP 8.2, AIRS, MICAI, ICEC, IRMA, IAM, ECKM and ECSM. I has served as the Guest Editor for a Special Issue of the International Journal of E-Business Research (IJEBR) entitled “Smart Mobile Media Services (SMMS)”. I have also co-authored a whitepaper series for Allied Irish Bank Merchant Services (AIBMS) on Mobile Commerce and Mobile Payments.

My research ethos is very much aligned with industry engagement to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems, and to maximise the potential return from new opportunities. I am a very strong advocate for integrating the research knowledge, skills, experience, and connections garnered from working with industry, with the structure, course content, and assessment of academic programmes. This I believe is key to ensuring that graduates are well equipped with the appropriate knowledge and skills to make an immediate and significant impact in the workplace, and ultimately to contribute to the sustainability and growth of the national economy. Therefore, I believe it is essential to create a seamless link between academia and industry. These research beliefs are evident in my work with:

  • BlockCops – Insurance as a Service (IaaS),
  • The development of the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Business Information Systems (BIS),
  • The Smart Mobile Media Services Group (SMMSG) (a collaborative research group between WIT and UCC),
  • The B-MIDEA Software Commercialisation Project (an Enterprise Ireland funded collaborative project between UCC/WIT and the Financial Services industry), and,
  • The development of the MSc in Global Financial Information Systems.

Aidan has been a leading member of research teams which have been successful in securing research funding and programme development funding in recent years. Aidan is currently the Principal Investigator in a Blockchain Insurance as a Service (IaaS) Enterprise Ireland funded project. I was a Co-Principal Investigator on the B-MIDEA project (B-MIDEA Web Portal). The B-MIDEA team created a business intelligence application, incorporating prediction and simulation capabilities, enabling organisation's to efficiently retrieve and analyse the very latest developments relating to financial service products/services worldwide and gain real-time insight on consumer sentiment through retrieving, amalgamating, analysing and visualising the millions of items of data items that exist online and in social media. The B-MIDEA project facilitated new service and job creation in organisation’s including Fexco as outlined in Enterprise Ireland Publication of Winter 2013 (p.6) (Product Innovation Opens German Market to British Online Traders). The project was also mentioned at the First UCC Board of Governors meeting to be held in County Waterford on April 14th, 2014 as outlined in the UCC Press Release (First UCC Board of Governors' meeting in Co Waterford).

I am an active member of a number of leading international academic associations including the Irish Academy of Management, the Association of Information Systems including the Irish Chapter, and the Information Management Resources Association.

Teaching

Mr Brendan Kerin, Permanent TSB Dr Aidan Duane; and students from the MSc in GFIS

Teaching and Learning Statement

I have been teaching Business Information Systems modules at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) since January 2000. Throughout my time I have endeavoured to integrate into my teaching practice, the knowledge and skills learned from engaging in research and industry-based projects. I am a keen advocate of using action-based learning, live cases, simulations, and problem based learning in my lecturers and workshops.

I believe that positive targeted feedback and encouragement reinforces a students learning and desire to learn. I have always endeavoured to support my students to the best of my ability. I use every opportunity and connection I have to find employment for my students, and I continue to support my students in whatever way I can after they graduate. My greatest source of pride is to see them succeed in their careers. Maximisation of their skills, knowledge and opportunities, and engaging in life-long learning and networking, are key aspects to career success that I endeavour to embed in my students.

Dr. Aidan Duane and MSc in GFIS at the Irish Central Bank

I have delivered a wide variety of Business Information Systems modules on numerous different programmes in the School of Business from Level 6 to Level 10. As a Lecturer in Information Systems, I specialise in: FinTech & Blockchain (L9), Data Modelling and Analytics (L9), Business Intelligence (L9), Global Banking, Transaction and Payment Systems (L9), SWIFT e-Learning (L9), Advanced Financial Information Systems (L8) and MIS & E-Business (L8). I also serve as Lead Research Supervisor for the DBA (L10), MBS (L9), MSc (L9), BBS (L8) and Workshop Lead in Academic Writing for the DBA (L10). I also deliver regular workshops on “Social Media Integration” for SME’s, and “Effective Use of Social Media for Networking and Careers” for final year undergraduate and postgraduate students in WIT. Over the past 19 years, I have also delivered numerous external industry workshops particularly to SMEs on topics such as E-Commerce, Web Design, Online Marketing, Advanced Excel Analysis, Database Modeling and Analysis, M-Commerce, M-Payments, Social Media, FinTech, and Innovative Business Modeling.

Dr Aidan Duane with MSc in GFIS Students at Realex Payments

From 2012-2015, I served as the Programme Director for the MSc in Global Financial Information Systems (GFIS) as well as the Professional Internship Coordinator and Academic Liaison for the programme. The MSc in GFIS was runner-up for the Postgrad Ireland “Best New Course of the Year 2013”. During my time as Programme Director, I used my industry contacts to place students from the MSc in GFIS in internships with companies such as Zurich, State Street Financial Services, Ernst & Young, Sun Life Financial, Citco, Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank, Irish Central Bank, IBM, Microsoft Ireland, Bluefin Payments, Northern Trust, KBC, AON Centre for Innovation and Analytics, EBS, Citi, Irish Revenue Commissioners, Glanbia Global Technology Centre, DePuy Synthes, Synchronoss Technologies, and Kerry Group. All of these positions became permanent on successful completion of the internships and all are still employed. In June 2013, the MSc in GFIS was selected as a “programme success story” for the national poster campaign for Springboard 2013-2014, and one of our programme participants was selected as a “participant success story”. From 2005 to 2008, I also served as the Programme Director for the BA in Business Information Systems.

Personally, I like to practice what I teach, so not only do I always encourage all of my students to engage in lifelong learning, I like to practice it myself. Thusly, I have also completed the Certified Training Professional (CTP) examinations with the Irish Computer Society (2007); the professional PRINCE II Project Management examinations (2008); and the SAP Business Intelligence: BI1 & BI2 (2013/2014). In order to understand more about the pedagogy, I am also currently completing modules  (September 2016 to Present) from the WIT Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning in Further and Higher Education at WIT.

While we do not use teaching evaluations in the IoT sector in Ireland, access to student feedback is provided via my LinkedIn profile.

Research Supervision

I have supervised to completion DBA, MSc and MBS research students. I have also supervised completed minor dissertations on a broad range of programmes including Masters of Business in Management, Masters of Business in Marketing, and Executive Masters in Business Administration.

Development Roles

I have been involved in the development of numerous new programmes in the School of Business at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At postgraduate level, in addition to the MSc in GFIS, I also worked on the development of the Executive MBA and the Professional DBA. At undergraduate, I recently successfully developed and had approved a new Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Business information Systems (BIS). Both the MSc in GFIS and the BBS in BIS are funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

External to WIT, I was responsible for the development of E-Business modules for the Irish National Course Design Group for the Future Skills Initiative (FSI). I also worked with a development team to develop a National Diploma in Financial Services for State Street Bank in Kilkenny. I was also a member of the Electronic Business Services Centre (EBSC) of Deloitte.
