My Biography

Currently Bernard is  a Research Fellow in TSSG, Waterford Institute of Technology, working in the CONNECT Centre, particularly on the Intel Workplan relating to the optimisation of services for virtualised heterogeneous networks and of networks for distributed, composed microservices, specifically applied to Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

Research

For an incomplete, but representative, publication list, see https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Bernard_Butler/publications

My current research interests include

  • domain models for organisations: semantically rich, linked data, novel database techniques
  • system performance: statistical models, prediction and visualisation
  • data science: preparation (cleaning, filtering, etc.), statistical learning and prediction, semantic uplift, visualisation, closing the loop: deriving actions
  • resource management in clouds/data centres: maximising revenue while minimising costs (particularly energy)
  • Internet of Things:
    • collecting and using data from sensors, particularly with resource constraints (storage, time, CPU, ...),
    • additional/secondary uses of that data, e.g., for ambient intelligence
    • IoT as a controlled ecosystem
