My Biography

I am a Lecturer in criminal law and criminology at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). I completed my undergraduate studies in law at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and later returned to TCD to complete my PhD in 2008. I also hold an M.Sc. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Edinburgh University and I am professionally qualified as a barrister.

Currently I lecture Criminology, Policing and the Police, and Probation on the BA (Honours) Criminal Justice Studies. I was Programme Leader for the BA (Honours) in Criminal Justice Studies at WIT from 2012 to 2014. At postgraduate level, I teach Comparative Criminal Justice Systems as an elective on the MA in Applied Social Studies at WIT. From 2016-2017 I was programme leader for the Higher Certificate in Custodial Care which provides training to Recruit Prison Officers in collaboration with the Irish Prison Service.

I am an experienced researcher and conducted my first research study in the area of sentencing for my PhD which focused on exploring the views, rationals and sentencing practices of District and Circuit Court judges in Ireland.  I also superivse a nubmer of PhD resaerchers and my current funded research projects include a study examining the role of pre-sentence reports in sentencing, another focused on understanding the links between and regulation of alcohol and public order offences in the night-time economy, and another examining the nature of the sentencing of environmental offences in Ireland.

I was a member of the management committee of the COST Action Exploring Offender Supervision in Europe (IS1106) and was Co-Chair of its Wokring Group on Decision Making. Arising from that work is a book I recently co-edited a book with Professor Miranda Boone, Leiden University, Netherlands on The Enforcement of Offender Supervision: Understanding Breach Processes-see the link below.

I am a co-founding member of the European Society of Criminology’s (ESC) Working Group on Sentencing and Penal Decision Making and a member of the ESC’s Working Group on Community Sanctions.
