My Biography

I spent 40 years in the education sector in Ireland as a teacher, school principal (second-level) and education officer for the Presentation Sisters.

As I prepared for retirement in Aug 2012 I felt called to promote the practice of meditation with children and young people and I have spent the past nine years doing that with a small team of volunteers, as part of an initiative with Christian Meditation Ireland (CMI).

Over the past nine years we have introduced meditation to over 250 primary (elementary) schools on a whole-school basis and over 50,000 children have learned to meditate in silence.

As I started that project in August 2012 I began an MA in Applied Spirituality at All Hallows College, Dublin (now offered through WIT) and went on to do a PhD on children's spirituality and the practice of meditation under the supervision of Dr Michael Howlett at WIT. I received my award in 2017.

Research

I began my doctoral studies in 2013 through WIT, under the supervision of Dr Michael Howlett, researching children's spirituality and the practice of meditation. I was awarded a PhD in 2017.

The International Journal for Children’s Spirituality published my paper Children’s Spirituality and the Practice of Meditation in Irish Primary Schools in December 2016. Other international journals have published related articles.

I authored a book Meditation with Children: A Resource for Teachers and Parents to help others to appreciate the children's rich experience of the practice and their ability to give deep metaphorical description to their experience of the fruits of meditation.

I also produced a CD with Canadian contemplative singer Alana Levandoski to help teachers and parents explore the spiritual fruits of meditation with children. The CD Meditation with Children: Thoughts and Reflections has ten songs, one for each month of the school year, each one related to the findings of my research.

I am a member of the Advisory Board of SpIRE (Spirituality Institute for Research and Education) and a thesis supervisor for the Masters in Applied Spirituality at WIT.

I am member of SSCS (Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality) and INSS (International network for the Study of Spirituality) and I am a member of the INSS Spirituality and Consciousness Special Interest Group.

Professional

I am currently a thesis supervisor on the Masters in Applied Spirituality program at WIT.
