My Biography

Ultan  is a lecturer in the Department of Science in WIT and is Joint  programme leader for the Higher Diploma in Agri-Food Systems. He holds a Ph.D in Biosystems Engineering from University College Dublin. His dissertation investigated the feasibility of incorporating Ultra High Frequency Radio Frequency Identification (UHF RFID) as an Automatic ID Data Carrier for Item Level Food Supply Chain Traceability. Following this his MBA focused on UHF RFID and the EPCglobal Network as an Organisational Competitive Tool toward a Sustainable Competitive Advantage within the modern day organisation.

Prior to this his MSc in Engineering Technology from University College Dublin investigated Milk Coagulation Kinetics Using Near-Infra Red Spectroscopy as a process monitoring technology. He holds a  Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Food Technology from University College Cork.

Dr Mc Carthy spent a number of years as a post Doctoral researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering - RFID Center for Applied Research, at the University of South Florida, Florida, USA.  On return to Ireland and prior to joining Waterford Institute of technology Dr. Mc Carthy was centre manager at the Intelligent Mechatronics and RFID Technology Gateway (IMaR).
