This 30 Credit Award entitled Teaching Essential Literacies comprises of three stand-alone awards, of 10 Credits each, all at NFQ Level 6:
- Developing Literacies
- Adult Numeracy
- Digital Literacy in Adult and Further Education
This minor award is suitable as professional learning and development as it introduces the theory and practice of adult literacy. It is suitable for practitioners with a background in adult literacy, or adult and further education. It is also suitable for those with no adult education experience but who have an interest in and awareness of the challenges faced by those with unmet literacy needs.
This minor award is not an entry route to the Higher Certificate in Literacy Development but progression is possible.
Delivery:
The Certificate in Teaching Essential Literacies is a part-time blended learning modular programme with a delivery model that facilitates the working or prospective practitioner. The programme is delivered over a minimum of one year in a flexible part-time mode with a mix of face to face and online delivery. Modules are typically completed over four days comprising of two blocks (Friday and Saturday) with a break between each block.

Adult Numeracy (10 Credits)
This module aims to introduce students to the concept of numeracy within a social and cultural context and to become familiar with teaching and learning methodologies to effectively deliver numeracy to adult learners.
Developing Literacy 1 (10 Credits)
This module aims to give an understanding of, and practice in, the potential of literacy as a tool for personal and social transformation.
Digital Literacy in Adult and Further Education (10 Credits)
This module aims to give students an insight into some of the key digital technologies (including e-learning) and to their application to the teaching of adult literacy programmes. In particular, it aims to develop the skills required to effectively integrate digital technologies and ICT into curriculum development and allows students to experience the digital technologies central to the course as part of the learning process.
Applicants must:
- Have on-going experience in adult literacy for the duration of the programme and must show a capacity for third-level study.
- Complete an application form and in some cases attend for interview in order to assess their suitability for the programme.
- Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English.
Non-Standard Applicants/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Literacy Practitioner Subsidy Form
On successful completion of the Certificate in Teaching Essential Literacies (30 credit minor award), graduates may progress to undertake and complete an additional 90 credits to be awarded the 120 credit NFQ Level 6 Higher Certificate in Arts in Adult and Further Education. However, graduates who wish to deepen their knowledge and expertise in adult literacy tutoring and gain the qualification required for adult literacy tutors may go on to undertake and complete an additional 90 credits on the 120 credit NFQ Level 6 Higher Certificate in Arts in Literacy Development programme, which is the only nationally recognised programme designed specifically for adult literacy practitioners. Graduates from the programme have held roles including adult literacy organiser, adult literacy tutor, resource worker, adult basic education tutor.
