Opportunities

The programme equips participants with core knowledge of operational excellence, project management, supply chain management, innovation and change management. The skills needed for modern manufacturing have changed significantly over the past 30 years and this course will seek to address modern skills needs in business and operations management. The cross-enterprise skills requirements identified in a number of government reports are reflected in the design of module content and in the assessment of course material.

A number of individuals in a range of companies in the South East have been consulted and provided an input to this programme. These include Lake Region Medical, Teva, Genzyme, Eistech and Cartamundi. Graduates of this programme have initiated the development of a new business (Eistech) which has led to significant job creation in the South East.  In particular executives from Lake Region Medical have been involved in co-delivering some of the modules on the programme.

The collaboration with Lake Region is mirrored by similar support from TEVA (Pharmachem) and DePuy (Johnson and Johnson) which is a medical device company.

All students attend the SETU Waterford Annual Lean Management Forum event which is organised for May of each academic year. Speakers have included executives from Toyota, Genzyme, Enterprise Ireland, Lake Region Medical and Cartamundi.  The learning event also includes collaboration with the Irish Centre of Business Excellence and the South East Lean forum. The event is used to showcase the skills of students on business programmes in SETU Waterford.

Student Testimonials

“Overall, I am so glad I completed this course. Thanks to it, I got the job I always dreamed of. Before the course I was working as a floor manager. After five years I was made redundant and was unemployed for six months. During the course I got a job as a weekend manager. I applied for a job a couple of weeks ago for a position as store manager and this morning I got it. I know that the course gave me the tools to be a professional manager and for that I would like to thank all of my mentors and the staff involved”.

-Katarzyna KowalCzyk - Retail Manager, Carlow.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of completing the course I did, a Higher Diploma in Business (Management), and cannot recommend it highly enough. There are excellent supports in place such as study courses and guides, academic writing lessons, teamwork lessons. The course is very achievable for people with relevant life and work experience who are willing to work hard. Yes, the hours can be long, however it is only for a few months and the outcome is well worth it”.

-Caroline Summers - Senior Manager, Harvey Norman Ireland, Kilkenny (published in the HEA Changing Voices Changing Ireland).
