What is the Master of Business (Human Resource Management Stream)? CIPD

The MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) is customised for the modern business climate, which demands a dynamic and flexible approach to management and an increased emphasis on fostering a knowledge-based economy. In this setting the importance of employees, and consequently the human resource function, has never been greater. Employees are increasingly viewed as the critical determinant of an organisations success and thus the professional management of people takes centre stage. The MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) is designed to provide graduates with the opportunity to enhance their specialist subject knowledge in HR whilst gaining a deeper knowledge of key contemporary issues prevailing in the business environment. Candidates will experience innovative learning methods, undertake practical assignments and acquire key competencies and skills to help them advance their career. Emphasis is placed on developing skills of critical thinking, analysis, debate, dealing with high levels of ambiguity and the simultaneous treatment of inter dependent decisions in a more complex environment. Students achieve this through participation in class activities and through involvement in a series of events including those organised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The School of Business at SETU Waterford is an accredited centre for the CIPD professional body and the MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) awards associate membership of the CIPD and with one year’s relevant experience Chartered member of CIPD (MCIPD) which is a global qualification.

Career Opportunities

The central aim of the MBS (Human Resource Management Stream) is to foster and develop both the conceptual and practical skills needed to contribute, succeed and lead in the current dynamic and challenging business climate. Many MBS graduates progress to senior management in a variety of areas including industrial relations, employer agencies, consultancy and training and development.

In addition to the academic content, the course also includes elements designed to give practical employment experience, and develop professional skills. As part of the programme, students have access to SETU Waterford’s Careers Management Centre and they work closely careers advisers to support them with career development from initial self-assessment through the job search and beyond.

Students benefit from a customised Business series which brings together invited keynote speakers from a diverse range of businesses and public policy organisations, so that students have the opportunity to learn from industry-leading practitioners. Previous MBS students have benefited from these close links with industry and many of our partner organisations have been happy to consider our students for first job positions alongside more experienced applicants.

The course also incorporates a number of professional development workshops (including a day-long team development event at induction, an international study tour and a ‘Dragons Den’ competition event) during the year to extend student communication and presentation skills, enhance self-awareness, teamwork and cultural sensitivity, and allow graduates to perform effectively in organisations upon graduation.

A graduate may also apply for further post graduate Level 10 studies, such as a PhD by Research at SETU Waterford or to other third level institutions, either nationally or internationally.

Student Testimonials

"After completing the Higher Diploma in Business in Management here at SETU, I was keen to pursue a Masters degree, and human resources caught my interest. The course offers the opportunity for CIPD accreditation and as well as the advanced modules in HR, the department also provides mediation workshops and seminars from leading businesspeople. After completing my MBS HRM, I now have acquired a much more in-depth education and understanding of human resources theory and practice from my studies at SETU Business School. This has helped me to transition well into workplace and to apply my skills and knowledge in a new and exciting role in HR."

Kate Greig Parsons, HR Assistant, DCU

“The MBS was one of the most challenging but also rewarding experiences I have done to date. It really closed the gap for me before moving into the work place. I have found that the skills I gained in the MBS are really appreciated by my employers and I am constantly using these in my work. Furthermore the friends I built up during the MBS have been invaluable. The business world is all about networking and there is no better place that to do that in the MBS in this University.”

Brendan Ring - HR Business Partner, Voxpro

"The MBS (HRM Stream) enhanced my knowledge in a very practical & interactive environment that promoted innovative & fun learning methods such as Business Simulations, Dragons Den, and Case Exercises. Attending lectures in Brussels was also a great opportunity to experience a new culture and socialise with peers. The lecturers are very committed, approachable and fun, they always made themselves available to help with our individual and team requests. The MBS - (HRM Stream) is a comprehensive CIPD certified programme, highly valuable in today’s market for HR professionals. I would highly recommend this programme to post graduates looking to take that next step as an SME, it has helped open doors in my HR career and will continue doing so."
