Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Adult and Further Education
The B.A. (Hons) in Adult and Further Education is a Level 8 one year follow-on Honours Degree to the Level 7 Degree and is designed to provide those already working within the adult and further education sector with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, skills and competences to enhance their work in those settings. Students on this programme have the opportunity to learn research skills and investigate a topic relevant to their practice.
This programme is aimed at those who do not need or already have Teaching Council registration. (Apply for the BA (Hons) in Teaching in Adult & Further Education if Teaching Council registration is important to you). 

18 months minimum. This course is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and blended learning. The classes are delivered in two-day blocs (Fridays and Saturdays) on campus in WIT (on average one or two blocs per month).

€550 for the Research Project

Flexible payment options are in place for students who wish to pay per module/per month etc.

Programme Structure

The BA (Hons) in Adult and Further Education is a part-time blended learning programme with a delivery model that facilitates the working practitioner. The programme is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and blended learning. Classes are delivered in weekend blocks (Friday and Saturday) on campus in WIT (on average 1 or 2 per month). Classes are workshop-style, where collective, collaborative and creative learning is strongly encouraged. 

The programme consists of a combination of taught modules, and a supervised research project. There are a number of mandatory modules and one elective module (60 credits in total). The modules address key areas in adult and further education including curriculum planning, research, policy, psychology, critical education theories and equality. Participants must complete the five mandatory modules and may then select 10 credits from the list of elective modules. The choice of elective module is subject to numbers/availability. Order of modules is indicative.

  • Applicants for this programme are required to hold a BA (Ord) in Adult and Further Education (NFQ Level 7) OR a BA (Ord) in Community Education and Development (NFQ Level 7)  OR  a relevant qualification equivalent to a full award at Level 7 (180 ECTS) .   • Applicants must have a minimum of 18 months professional experience in the adult and further education sector (FE teacher, FE trainer, FE tutor, resource worker, development worker, centre manager etc).  
  • Applicants must have access to ongoing professional experience for the duration of the programme.
  • Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English, you will need an IELTS score of 6 (minimum of 5 in each component) or equivalent.  Please see our website at www.wit.ie/englishrequirements

On successful completion of this course, graduates may progress to the NFQ Level 9 Postgraduate Diploma in Arts in Teaching in Further Education (WD589/WD569) or Master of Education in Teaching and Learning (WD603) or MA in Management in Education (WD548) in WIT or equivalent courses in another Higher Education Institute.  Please consult our Programme Pathways Infographic for further information.
