What is Fire Engineering?

There is growing awareness of fire safety design and growing concern about the competence of building passive fire protection installation professionals. The introduction of the Building Control Amendment Regulations (BCAR) has had a very significant effect on the way building design and construction is managed and implemented. Consequently, employers are increasingly looking for employees with specific sets of fire safety engineering skills. 

This new industry focused programme will be delivered on a flexible basis over three semesters (including summer), allowing completion in one calendar year. Students can progress at their own rate, by taking individual modules or minor awards.

The programme will be of interest to Built Environment professionals including, Architects, Architectural Technologists, Qualified Tradespersons, Construction and Facilities Managers, Buildings Services Engineers and Design Consultants, Fire Service and Fire Industry personnel wishing to specialise in Fire Engineering.

On Successful completion of the programme the student will be able to:

  • Investigate the phenomena and effects of fire and of the reaction and behaviour of people to fire, and to apply this knowledge to protect people, property and the environment from the destructive effects.
  • Generalise the scientific and technical principles underlying fire and fire fighting systems and design requirements of engineering projects.
  • Research and successfully complete fire engineering projects, both technical and managerial, within time and cost constraints and relevant national and international directives, and communicate effectively their resolution.
  • Solve common fire engineering problems through systematic analysis and design methods.
  • Apply their knowledge of fire safety and fire safety systems legislation to evaluate it's impact on the design and approval of building designs and fire safety systems.
  • Define the responsibilities of an engineering technologist and exercise independent technical judgement with significant autonomy.
  • Explore the wider social, political, business and economic context of the fire engineering professionalism.

Delivery

The course runs across two WIT semesters from mid-September 2019 to early May 2020. The course will run every second week - Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm. 

Qualification

Bachelor of Fire Engineering (60 credits, level 7)

Assessment 

Modules are assessde by a combination of in -class tests, continual assessments and final exams. 

Cost

This course funded under Springboard in 2019. Employed people pay €500.

Minor Awards

There are several minor awards embedded within the programme to cater for prospective students who may wish to earn a certificate in a specific area rather than a full BEng. The minor awards are:

  • Certificate in Fire Science - WD_CFSCI_MA  
  • Certificate in Fire Safety Systems- WD_CFRSY_MA 
  • Certificate in Fire Legislation - WD_CFRLG_MA
  • Certificate in Fire Safety - WD_CFIRS_MA
  • Certificate in Fire Safety Management - WD_CSAFE_MA

The fee for each minor award is €550

Applicants who have completed a minimum NQF Level 6 in a cognate area of study or have a senior trades apprenticeship qualification will be eligible to apply for the programme.

Entry to the programme may also be allowed via the Institute’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis. 

Eligible applicants must at least meet the minimum English language requirements for the Institute as detailed in the Quality Manual.

There are two application routes for the BEng in Fire Engineering depending on your previous academic qualifications.

  1. Applicants who have completed a minimum NQF Level 6 programme in Fire Engineering or in a cognate area of study will be eligible for entry to the programme. 
     
  2. Entry to the programme may also be allowed via the Institute’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis. This RPL process includes the matching of the candidate’s prior learning (education and experiential) with the equivalent Level 6 programme outcomes.

The programme provides pathways for graduates into the Fire Engineering industry where they will be culturally aware of the work and business environment and can engage in fire safety design, management and auditing.  

Graduates from this programme will be eligible to enter Year 3 of the BSc (Hons) in Construction Management & Engineering. Students will also have the opportunity to progress to a Level 8 qualification in LYIT as a route to becoming a Chartered Engineer.
