The BA (Hons) in Health Promotion is a full-time, four year, honours degree course, accredited by the International Union in Health Promotion & Education (IUHPE). This accreditation gives you world-wide recognition as a Health Promotion professional in practice and education.
What will you learn about on the BA (Hons) Health Promotion?
You will study nutrition and learn the science behind a healthy diet, how to analyse the diet and promote dietary change. You will learn practical facilitation and behaviour change skills and how to be an excellent communicator. You will learn how to be a critical consumer of research and how to conduct research. You will get practical experience of how to plan, deliver and evaluate health interventions and campaigns. You will learn about the body, disease and how to conduct health screening. You will learn about social justice, inequality and health policy and how to work with state agencies, local government, health organisations and communities in order to build capacity for better health.
The BA (Hons) Health Promotion will give you the skills to work with a wide range of groups (e.g., children, elderly, people with disabilities), in a wide range of settings (e.g., community centres, workplaces, schools) about a wide range of topics (e.g., mental health, physical activity, climate change)
Health Promotion Accreditation
The BA (Hons) in Health Promotion is the first undergraduate programme in Ireland to be awarded accreditation under the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) European Health Promotion Accreditation System. The accreditation is endorsed at national and European levels and offers professional recognition in Health Promotion practice and education.
Health Promotion Work Placement
There is a 16 week placement in the third year of the course. This introduces the student to practical health promotion settings and provides the student with the opportunity to practically apply the skills they have gained on the programme. Students have been placed in the following settings: Health Promotion Departments and Occupational Health Departments in the HSE, hospitals, state companies and private companies, Youth Services, Disability agencies, Adolescent Health and Information Projects, Community Projects and Adult Education Service, and V.E.C.s. International placements are available.
