Health Sciences (Common Entry)

Healthcare is a broad field with diverse areas of work where health science graduates can make a difference to people’s lives. There are many career options across a wide range of health related industries, ranging from direct individualised care to people across the lifespan from infancy to old age and persons with special needs, or through telehealth and telecare careers, to health care management roles or research.

Reasons to choose Health Sciences (Common Entry)

The Common Entry Scheme is for students interested in Health Care as a career, but who may be unsure of what exact area of health care they would like to work in. The BSc (Hons) in Health Sciences (Common Entry) is the gateway for the two Level 8 BSc (Hons) degrees in SETU Waterford:

In these degrees, placement experiences allow the student to experience the broad field of health care and help them choose a career path they feel passionate about.

Student Study Advisor

All students are assigned a study advisor, a lecturer from the Department, and are encouraged to link with this advisor to discuss programme progress and any issues including programme options and career opportunities. This support offers the opportunity to ask detailed questions and get individual guidance as to which discipline they could pursue. From second year onwards the student chooses to study either applied health care or health promotion and public health.

Year One

In the first year students get an opportunity to study two areas of health care in both semesters including Applied Health Care and Public Health & Health Promotion and if uncertain about which area of health science to study, a decision on which area they would like to focus on does not have to be made until the end of first year.

Leaving Cert: Minimum entry requirements for Health Sciences (Common Entry)

4 subjects: O6/H7
English or Irish: O6/H7
Mathematics: O6/H7

Applying for Health Sciences (Common Entry) on the CAO:

You can apply for WD005 only ONCE. You must select ONE degree option i.e. AHC (Applied Health Care) or HPP (Public Health and Health Promotion).

Applicants who select one specific degree option are guaranteed a place in the programme (e.g. WD005 AHC), subject to meeting the entry requirements and points. Applicants who are undecided should choose WD005 GEN.

At the end of year 1, students must confirm their degree option and may change their selection up to that date.

Advanced and Equivalent Entry for Health Sciences (Common Entry):

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities will be subject to your choice of specialist exit pathways. Health Sciences (Common Entry) is the gateway for the two Level 8 BSc (Hons) degrees in SETU Waterford, an Applied Health Care degree or a Public Health and Health Promotion degree. At the end of first year you will be asked to select one of the courses to study in order to obtain your final award. For more information on career opportunities visit the following courses:
