Course Description

This course is ideally suited to healthcare professionals and traditionally trained nurses who are interested in attaining a level 8 qualification in management and leadership. The course is structured to support the student while facilitating those who are in full time employment. During the semester each student is expected to attend one full day in college on alternate weeks. Through interactive workshops and stimulating discussion with colleagues leadership, management quality improvement and many other core concepts of management will be explored.

This programme emphasis is on helping each student reach his or her full potential and may be used in order to attain a management position or for those in management positions to develop further skills in this area.

Course Outline

This course will provide students with an opportunity for advancement within their chosen path of healthcare. In addition students may wish to pursue further studies at degree, masters or PhD level following this programme. It offers students an opportunity to discuss elements of healthcare practice in a safe and secure setting. where workshops will support students in the practical elements of healthcare management and leadership.

Unique Features

This programme is designed for a healthcare professional who is interested in further study and working full or part time. An incremental approach with face to face contact supplemented with online support will ensure that learning is supported throughout the programme. Participation in interactive workshops during in class days is encouraged and group learning is part of this programmes approach.


Delivery: The programme is due to start on Wednesday, 27 September 2017. The course is is six full days in total, running on alternative Wednesdays.

Qualification: Certificate in Management and Leadership for Healthcare (Level 8, 10 credits)

Entry Details

Applicants who do not hold the standard qualifying NFQ Level 8 qualification criteria, but have relevant work experience may be considered for admission to the programme under the Institute’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process and subject to an interview.

Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English.

Structure

This programme will be delivered over one semester commencing in September and finishing in December. In addition students are expected to participate in online learning and support acitvities. The programme structure is one full day of attendance in class on alternate weeks. This means that students will attend six onsite days over the semester.

  • Risk management
  • Budgeting and service development, delivery and evaluation and the role of the leader in strategic planning
  • Evidence based practice, policy guideline development and implementation.
