Second Language Learning & Teaching 

This two year part-time programme provides language teachers with professional and academic opportunities and actively engages language practitioners in a collective reflection on the processes of language learning and teaching. Moreover, the course mirrors current trends and debates in language learning in Ireland and in Europe.

The course is open to teachers of Italian, Spanish, German, French, Irish and/or English as a second/foreign language. The issues addressed in the programme are relevant to all language teachers interested in Second Language Learning theories and second language learning and teaching methodologies. However, relevance at the individual’s level is ensured by the opportunity to evaluate and develop materials for her/his own class/es and to reflect on her/his practice.

More specifically, the programme aims to provide:

  • a theoretical and critical perspective on contemporary issues in Second Language Acquisition

  • a collaborative opportunity for language teachers from the main education sectors to share  and develop knowledge and skills, thus creating an awareness of a need for a continuum in language education, leading to a revitalisation of language learning and teaching

  • opportunities for teachers to become reflective practitioners committed to on-going academic and professional development.

Second Language Learning & Teaching Entry Requirements

  • An Honours degree in an appropriate subject area will be required for direct entry to this course. The course is aimed at practising teachers who are currently involved in the teaching of Italian, Spanish, German, French, Irish and/or EFL for 2 years or more.

  • The number of places available on the course is limited to 16 in the first year and therefore a selection interview process may be necessary.

  • Applicants whose first language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English, please see WIT’s English Language Requirements for details.
