Programme Structure

This programme is at NQF Level 9 and it has been designed for participants who want to develop their Construction Project Management knowledge and skills at postgraduate level. While it is open to NQF Level 8 degree holders from construction related disciplines (e.g. Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Architecture, Architectural Technology, Construction Management), it is also open to those with either NQF Level 7 qualifications or Professional Body qualifications in addition to relevant work experience.

Applicants for this one-year full-time programme are a mix of recent graduates as well as others who are returning to higher education. Completing this programme and gaining the MSc qualification will enable the successful participants to obtain employment in the dynamic Engineering and Construction Industry (Irish and International) and generally enhance their overall career prospects.

The programme is currently accredited by the CIOB and SCSI for candidates with the relevant prior qualifications.

Programme Aims

This programme aims to:

  • Develop a deep understanding of and competence in the key project management processes in a construction environment;

  • Develop the participants’ research knowledge and capabilities, thus enabling their application to the management of projects, innovation and continuous improvement in the construction industry.

The normal minimum expected entry requirement for the MSc in Construction Project Management will be a cognate accredited NFQ Level 8 Honours 2.2. Engineering or Science Degree.

Entry to the programmes may also be allowed via the university’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis. This robust RPL process demonstrates that the candidate’s prior learning (education and experiential) has achieved outcomes commensurate with accredited Level 8 programme outcomes. Each RPL applicant must submit of a portfolio of evidence that maps the prior learning against the required Level 8 outcomes. This portfolio is reviewed by the Programme Leader and Head of Department and is supplemented by an interview.

All applications should be made via the online facility at www.pac.ie

International Students

International Students are advised to contact the SETU Waterford International Office before submitting an application via PAC. The International Office staff will give guidelines on how to apply and use PAC. The International also assists the Programme Leader and the Head of Department in their assessment of each International applicant’s educational qualifications and suitability for the programme.

This includes a detailed review of all relevant documentation and in many cases interviews (e.g. via Skype).   Applicants whose first language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English, please see SETU Waterford’s English Language Requirements for details.

Full-time over one year

The full-time programme is of interest to recent graduates as well as others who are returning to higher education in order to improve their skills and employment prospects. The full-time version of the MScCPM involves approximately 12 hours of class contact per week in each of the first 2 semesters (S1: September to December and S2: January to May).

These classes are typically held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The third semester (S3: May to September) is used to complete the Research Dissertation/Thesis.

Part-time over two years

The part-time programme has been designed primarily to suit those who are in employment and who wish to gain the MScCPM qualification while continuing to work. Attendance at SETU Waterford is normally required for 18 days per year in 6 x 3 day sessions (Thursday, Friday and Saturday). Applicants should apply for WD542 through the PAC application system.

There is significant use of the Institute’s online Learning Management System ‘Moodle’ on this programme.
