Practical Public Relations

The aim of this module is to develop the student's ability in practical PR techniques including writing press releases, brochure and newsletter design, PR Campaign Planning and developing a PR pitch. It will cover topics including:

  • Framing the Message - Defining Stakeholders - Choosing a Medium

  • Media Relations: The Role of the Press Officer - Writing News & Feature Releases

  • PR Campaign Planning & Structure

  • Event Management: Procedures & Techniques

  • Brochures/Newsletter - Barriers to Communication; Effective Design

  • Corporate PR Campaigns - Communication Audits; Corporate Identity Reviews

  • Crisis Management Campaigns; Preparing a Crisis Plan; Communication Techniques 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:

  • Discuss the most appropriate communication strategies for an organisation's stakeholders

  • Design and write effective press releases

  • Understand the barriers to communication and their impact on effective brochure and newsletter design

  • Critically evaluate the effectiveness of a brochure or newsletter as a communication tool

  • Present an effective PR Pitch for a PR Campaign

  • Develop a Practical PR Campaign

Practical Public Relations Entry Requrements
