Cycling- Michael O' Loughlin f

Michael competed in the World Junior Cycling Championships in Richmond, Virgina, USA on the 19th- 27th September where he represented Ireland. He raced in both the Men’s Time Trial and Road Race events.

In the Men’s Time Trial he placed an amazing 8th place where five out of the seven riders ahead of him were all in their second, and  final, year in that category, putting him in line for medal contention next year.

Michael also finished best of the Irish in 38th position in the Junior Men’s Road Race.


Paralympic Athlete – Hayley Fitzsimons

A huge congratulations to 2nd year Recreation and Sports Management student Hayley Fitzsimons who has been selected to represent Ireland in the upcoming IPC Paralympic Athletics World Championships which are set to take place in Doha, Qatar from October 22nd – 31st. 

Hayley from Waterford is competing in the F40 Class Shot Put event and is part of a team which comprises of three male and six female athletes.

Over 1400 athletes from 100 countries are set to compete in 214 medal events in Doha, which will be held in the 12,000 capacity Suhaim Bin Hamam stadium in the Qatar Sports Club. The Irish team fly out on Saturday 17th October.

Camogie- Laura Treacy

Huge congratulations to 3rd year General Nursing student and Gold Scholarship Recipient Laura Treacy who recently won the East Cork District Sports Person of the Month Award for October.

Athletics - Hayley Fitzsimons

A massive congratulations to Hayley Fitzsimons 2nd year Recreation and Sports Management student who recently competed in the IPC Paralympic Athletics World Championships which was held in Doha, Qatar.

Hayley from Waterford is a newcomer to this level of competition. Hayley threw a lifetime best in the final of her event; the F40 Shot Put to claim fifth place overall.

  Hurling - Kevin Blanchfield 

Congratulations to Scholarship recipient Kevin Blanchfield who was a member of the Bennettsbridge team that won the Leinster Intermediate Club Final on Saturday.

Bennettsbridge bet Kiltale from Meath 1-14  to 0-13.

Cookery Demonstration  - Edward Hayden

The Scholarship students attended a cookery demonstration on Monday 23rd November with well-known chef and food writer/blogger Edward Hayden.

Edward works as a culinary lecturer at Waterford Institute of Technology and has also done a variety of cookery demonstrations around Ireland.

Edward concentrated on healthy, affordable and quick dinner ideas that the students could make while working around their hectic schedules.

He made four different dishes which consisted of salmon, chicken, mince and vegetables. The dishes were a great hit with the scholarship students.


Camogie - Ashbourne Cup

After last years impressive display WIT Camogie will be out to retain their title with the first group match taking place Wednesday 25th November. The match will be taking place in WIT's Sports Campus in Carriganore.

The Ashbourne Cup panel is made up of a number of scholarship students:

  • Laura Treacy a Gold Scholarship recipent who was a member of the Cork Senior Camogie team that won the All Ireland Senior Camogie Final. Laura recieved a Centenary Ashbourne All-Star in 2014. 
  • Silver Scholarship student Miriam Walsh and Bronze Scholarship student Meighan Farrell who are both key players on the Kilkenny Camogie team. Both girls also recieved a Centenary Ashbourne All-Star in 2014.
  • 1st year Bronze recipients Michelle Nolan and Lorraine Bray. Michelle plays a huge role on the Carlow Camogie team. Lorriane was a member of the Waterford Intermediate county team that won the All Ireland Intermediate Camogie Final. 
  • Munster GAA Scholarship student Jenny Logue who is on the Tipperary Camogie team. 

 


 Hurling - Kevin Blanchfield 

The very best of luck to Bronze Scholarship recipient Kevin Blanchfield who will be playing in the Intermediate Club Leinster Final with his club Bennettsbridge.

Bennettsbridge will take on Kiltale of Meath on Saturday 28th November at 2pm in Nolan Park.

Cycling - Michael O' Loughlin  

A huge congratulations to Gold Scholarship recipient Michael O' Loughlin who has just recently signed to Sir Bradley Wiggins' new cycling team Wiggins. ghk

Sir Bradley Wiggin is a winner of the Tour de France  in 2012 and also has 7 Olympic Medals including 4 gold.

This is a great achievement for Michael and we look forward to seeing him progress in the coming year.


Camogie - Miriam Walsh 

Well done to Miriam Walsh who was on the Tullaroan Camogie Team that won the Leinster Intermediate Club Final beating Mychall Camogie Team by one point.

Tullaroan will now progress onto the All Ireland Intermediate Club semi final.

Ladies Soccer - Tamara Furlong & Rachel Hutchinson  

A massive congratulations to Tamara Furlong and Rachel Hutchinson who were members of the Wexford Youths team that clinched a first ever FAI Women’s Cup title.

Wexford landed the FAI Continental Tyres Women’s Cup for the first time with a 4-2 penalty victory over Shelbourne after a dramatic 2-2 draw at Aviva Stadium. 

A game of great excitement saw Wexford Youths equalise five minutes into stoppage time before taking an extra-time lead before Shelbourne sending the game to penalties with the final kick of the game.

Ladies Socer - Rachel Hutchinson & Tamara Furlong

The best of luck to Scholarship Recipients Rachel Hutchinson & Tamara Furong who are members of the Wexford Youths Womens team that will take on Shelbourne  Ladies in the final of the Continental Tyres WFAI Cup in the Aviva Stadium on Sunday 8th  November 2015.

The Youths have already beaten UCD Waves & Peamount en route to the Cup Final and they will be looking to add some more silverwear to the Ferrycarrig Park Trophy Display following their Womens National League Title and the Mens  recent First Division League Title.

Camogie - Miriam Walsh & Michelle Nolan 

Well done and the best of luck to WIT camogie players Miriam Walsh a Silver Sports Scholarship recipient who is a  member of the Tullaroan camogie team and Michelle Nolan a Bronze Sports Scholarship recipient who is a  member of the Myshall camogie team who will be competing against one another in the  Leinster Intermediate Final on the 8th November.

Congratulations to 3rd year student Laura Treacy who has been nominated for an All Star and 1st year student Lorriane Bray who has received a Soaring Star Award.

The 12th annual Camogie All-Stars Awards sponsored by Liberty Insurance will take place at Citywest Hotel on November 7th.


Nutritional Talk- Stephen Barrett

Stephen Barrett gave a talk to all Scholarship students yesterday evening. Stephen is an Assistant Lecturer and Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Science in WIT.

He also works as an Exercise Physiologist with the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS) specialising in Exercise Immunology working mainly with boxers and distance runners in the lead up to Rio 2016. Stephen also works closely with the Waterford Senior hurling team. 

He spoke about the huge importance of recovery around training and competition and he will focus on further specific topics in the coming weeks. All the athletes gathered information that will help them improve in their specific sports.

It was a great evening leaving everyone looking forward to the next talk. 


Mens Soccer - Shane Nolan & Aaron O' Connor 

Scholarship students Shane Nolan and Aaron O' Connor along with their WIT Mens Futsals Team made it a two in a row in the CUFL National Futsal Finals. WIT had to fight off tough competition to win the title once again.

WIT will now hope to travel to the European Games this summer in Croatia.

Well done to Shane,Aaron and their teammates. 


Camogie - Michelle Nolan  GH

Congratulations to Michelle Nolan, Carlow & Myshall Camogie Player on being selected as the camogie winner of the County Carlow/Nationalist Sports Award.

Michelle will be presented with her award at a ceremony in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow in mid February.


Hurling - Kevin Blanchfield

First year student Kevin Blanchfield could have another few busy weeks ahead of himself as he is a member of the Bennettsbridge hurling team that is fighting to make the Intermediate All Ireland Final.

Kevin along with his team Bennettsbridge are set to play the All Ireland Semi-Final on Saturday January 23rd  in Cashel against Wolfe Tones of Clare.

Camogie - Miriam Walsh 

It was a busy few months for Silver Scholarship student Miriam Walsh and her Tullaroan camogie teammates.

After enjoying the Christmas break they are now back in action on the 31st January where they will take on Cahir in the All Ireland Intermediate Camogie Club Semi final. 

The match is to take place at 2pm in Freshford. 


Cycling - Michael O' Loughlin 

It's straight back to work after the Christmas break for 2nd year Sports Coaching & Performance student Michael O' Loughlin.

Michael is set to travel to Salou, Spain for an intense two week training camp with his cycling team Team Wiggins.

Soccer - Matthew Connor 

Congratulations to Silver Scholarship recipient Matthew Connor who has just recently been signed to Wexford Youths.

Matthew a gaolkeeper has been capped for the Republic of Ireland at Under-17 and Under-18 level and played his schoolboy football with Tramore AFC in Waterford.

He also lined out for numerous Waterford Schoolboy League teams and the Waterford Inter League Youth squad. 

Matthew is curently studying Recreation and Sports Management here in WIT.

Hurling - Kevin Blanchfield 

A huge congratulations to first year Exercise & Health student Kevin Blanchfield on his Intermediate All Ireland Club Championship win yesterday with his club Bennettsbridge.

Kevin who is a Bronze Scholarship recipient was a key member to the Bennettsbridge team. They played Abbeyknockmoy from Galway where the score ended 1-17 to 1-14 to Bennettsbridge. 

Bennettsbridge created history by becoming the first side to put junior and intermediate club hurling championship wins back-to-back. 

Well done to Kevin and his teammates. 


Awards Night

The 2015-2016 Scholarship Awards Night took place on Thursday 10th March. We were delighted to have former WBO Middleweight World Boxing Champion Andy Lee as our special guest on the evening.

Awards were presented to the Gold, Silver, Bronze, Sports Recognition, Gaelic Players Association and Munster Council atheltes on the evening.

Gold Scholarship athlete Michael O'Loughlin was also presented with the inaugural Scholarship Student of the Year award for his continuous hard work and determination regarding his academic studies and sporting career. 

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended our Sport Scholarship Awards Ceremony and a special mention to our President Willie Donnelly, Munster GAA Chairman Jerry O' Sullivan and our special guest Andy Lee for joining us.


Niall McNamee Talk 

We would like to say a massive thank you to Offaly's Niall McNamee who came down to speak to the scholarship students yesterday evening. 

One of the most genuine men in sport today. Niall gave a great talk about his battles with gambling addiction. He opened up about his own experiences with gambling which gave an insight to what some people are going through.

Niall was selected as the Offaly captain while battling his own demons off the pitch.

A very honest talk that a lot of people could relate to either themselves or someone that they know.
