Our mission at Student Life & Learning is to promote the academic success and all round experience of students, especially undergraduates, while reinforcing the core values of WIT. We accomplish this by providing support in an accessible and understanding environment.
We further provide advice and support for students and act as a hub of resources, referrals and information across the WIT community.
WIT offers plenty of helpful resources for students, but navigating them can sometimes be a challenge. At SLL we try to streamline the provision of student support by providing an easy and central place to ask for help. Our team works with students on a wide variety of issues, including both personal and academic concerns. In fact, many students who seek our services are dealing with a combination of difficulties. If we can’t provide you with assistance, we’ll be sure to refer you to another individual or office that can.

Academic Writing Workshops are available each week during term time only.
List of topics covered
Learning to distinguish the difference in writing fact and fiction. Structuring the sentence and maintaining the topic. Learn not to write as you speak.
A step beyond Leaving Cert. English: purpose and content. Structuring the sentence and paragraph with the correct use of language. (Formal writing/register).
Realising the difference between fact and fiction. Functional writing: writing with a purpose; concisely and directly with the ability to maintain the object of the set work. Learn not to write as you speak.
Use of appropriate language
Developing the use of appropriate language whilst overcoming common obstacles such as punctuation, spellings and contractions (wasn’t/was not) in writing simple tasks.
Using tasks: developing appropriate language. Include common grammatical obstacles such as the apostrophe, semicolon etc. Spellings such as practice/practise. (Noun/verb).
Revise functional writing with special attention to the use of the comma and semicolon. Spelling differences between nouns and verbs that are similar.
Follow up on punctuation. Writing practise.
Introduce exercises involving writing short passages incorporating the above.
Learning and practising the difference between reflective writing and personal writing. Keeping a reflective journal. The reflective journal and how it works. Personal writing versus functional writing.
Study Tips and keeping notes
Developing a personal style of keeping records and notes for later use. Reading books and journals.
Factual writing. Developing a sense of truth and avoiding rhetoric. Direct approach to writing facts.
Writing reports/reviews. Newspaper and magazine articles, critiques, etc., eg. Match reports without the usual clichés.
Researching books and journals. Referencing. Where to find relevant information and how to show where it was found. Avoiding plagiarism.
Creating an argument. Understanding what is meant by ‘argument’. Write as in debating an issue.
Structuring the Essay
Structuring the essay from where to begin to the final full stop. Planning the layout of an essay: abstract, introduction, main body of work, conclusion, references/bibliography and appendices.
