Call for abstracts

Call for abstracts 

We warmly welcome submissions for the conference for oral presentations, dialogue pairs, panel/workshop proposals or poster displays from scholars of all levels, who are working on EDI initiatives and/or researching inequality, broadly interpreted. The oral presentations and dialogue pairs are 15 minutes, the panel discussion are 45 mins and the workshops can be either 45 or 90 minutes. We are particularly interested in papers looking at impactful initiatives in the HE sector.

Topics might include (but are not restricted to) the following themes:

  • Inclusive pedagogies;
  • LGBTQ+ inclusion;
  • Eliminating sexual harassment and violence;
  • Race Equality;
  • Parenting and inequality;
  • Gender Equality;
  • Gender in research;
  • Facilitating differing abilities;
  • Minority representation;
  • Unconscious bias, privilege and cultural capital;
  • Turning EDI policy into practice;
  • Social justice;
  • Collaborative EDI in HE
  • Activism in HE.
  • The 2 day rate for 25th & 26th May ( coffee, tea, scones on arrival, lunch & including evening dinner on 25th- Cost is  €220

David Bass - Director for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Advance Higher Education – Keynote Speaker – Thursday 25th May 2023

David is responsible for providing organisational leadership for Advance HE’s approach and work on EDI. He works with universities and the tertiary sector, on equality and diversity, governance, leadership, strategic planning and management. David has helped lead cross-sector projects on various aspects of equality, including race , disability, freedom of speech and EDI, and contributed to Scottish Government and Equality and Human Rights Commission reviews of equality regulation in Scotland.

Prior to his current role, David was an Assistant Director in Advance HE’s Membership directorate, responsible for the engagement and development of our work in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Professor Jenny Mincin, PhD, MPhil, MPA, CIC-sp – Moderator of Panel Discussion

Jenny is an Associate Professor and Crisis Prevention and Intervention Program Coordinator at SUNY Empire University, School of Human Services and has over twenty-five years of experience in the government, non-governmental, and academic sectors. Her areas of specialty are crisis intervention, disaster human services, humanitarian aid, refugees, vulnerable/special needs populations, resiliency, and community rebuilding and recovery.  Prior to teaching at Empire, Jenny taught as Adjunct Professor at Hunter College Human Rights Program, Silberman School of Social Work and Fordham University’s School of Social Service Center for Nonprofit Leaders.  Jenny continues to work in the field supporting non-profits, governments, and refugee resettlement with Church World Service and others. She is the recipient of the SUNY Empire University Altes Prize for Exemplary Community Service and Scholars Across the College.

In addition to her academic experience, Jenny worked in the field for agencies such as for the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Federal Emergency Management Agency, and City of New York. At IRC, she was Deputy Director in the Women’s Protection and Empowerment Technical Unit and Regional Director for resettlement and integration.  As Deputy Director, she oversaw the emergency response team, operations, and research. As Regional Director, Jenny managed ten offices with over 250 staff and was responsible for delivery of services to refugees for all program areas including case management, employment services, social adjustment, and health and wellness. Prior to IRC, she worked with FEMA, Department of Homeland Security, and international, state, and local governments including as Director of Human Services at Nassau County Office of Emergency Management and Manager for City of New York. Jenny has worked on several local disasters and crises as well as federally declared disasters such as September 11 (response and crisis counseling program), 2003 Blackout, and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She got her start in human services as a HIV Community Liaison Worker working with post-partum women and their children in New York City.

Jenny received her PhD and MPhil in Social Welfare Policy from the Graduate Center/Silberman School of Social Work, City University of New York. She received her MPA from Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs and BA from Barnard College, Columbia University in Religion and Environmental Science. In addition, she is a certified in Crisis Intervention Counseling (CIC-CSp), Psychological First Aid, and Skills for Psychological Recovery. Jenny has two kids, two rescue dogs, and her hobby is making handmade soaps, scrubs and lotions.

Owen Patrick Ward is a native of Galway City and is a member of the Irish Travelling community. An early school leaver with no Junior or Leaving Certificate, he graduated from the University of Galway with a B.A. (Hons) and Masters in Post Primary education (PME). He was also a member of Údarás na hOllscoile (University of Galway Governing Authority), the first Irish Traveller elected to a University Governing authority in Ireland.

Owen is the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Programme Manager for Race Equality in the Office of the Vice-President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Galway and is leading the development, implementation and monitoring of a Race Equality Framework and Action Plan for the University.

He is a member of the Athena Swan Intersectionality Working Group and National Anti-Racism Committee that developed and recently launched the HEA Race Equality Implementation Plan 2022-2024, set of Anti-Racism Principles and the National Action Plan Against Racism for Ireland.

Owen has extensive experience working in higher education, is an advocate for widening participation of students from diverse socio economic backgrounds and the advancement of race equality in higher education.

Sergeant Geraldine Greene, Garda National Diversity and Integration Unit, Garda National Community Engagement Bureau, Garda Headquarters

Career Details:

Geraldine has 30 years policing experience in An Garda Síochána, 13 of those spent on operational policing duties in Pearse Street, Dublin City Centre.

In 2001 Geraldine was part of a small team who piloted the European Foundation for Quality Management system (EFQM) in An Garda Síochána and later developed a Crime Mapping system for the DMR South Central.

In 2006, on completion of a BA in Public Management, Geraldine was awarded the Jerry Mc Cabe Scholarship to John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York to study for a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Inspectorate General (Government Oversight). Geraldine received a first class honours degree and awarded a place on the Dean’s List.

From 2007-2018 Geraldine held a number of positions in Garda Headquarters including Organisation Development, Policy and Planning, Change Management and Strategic Planning Units. During this period Geraldine worked with teams at the strategic apex of the Garda Organisation, acting in consultancy roles to the Garda Executive.

In 2018, Geraldine took up her current position as Sergeant in the Garda National Diversity and Integration Unit (GNDIU).

Her role includes monitoring, advising, training and coordinating on all aspects of diversity and integration from an operational policing perspective, including in the area of Hate Crime. This includes:

  • Liaising with the public, investigators, victims NGOs, CSOs and other support services
  • Supporting and Delivering Training to Garda Diversity Officers
  • Developing policy, strategy and operational guidance on diversity, integration and Hate Crime
  • Overseeing and facilitating the implementation of policy and strategy
  • National EU Point of Contact for Hate Crime

Dr. Vanessa Lacey Vanessa has a vast experience in relation to trans and gender identity issues. She began the process of gender transition in 2007 after decades struggling with living an non-authentic life in many respects. Deciding to take a parallel approach to transition, Vanessa entered higher education for the first time in her life, primarily undertaking a foundation in counselling in WIT, and following with a BA in Psychology. During her time in academia, she began working with national Trans NGO TENI, over an 11year period and had many highlights, including developing the family support group TransParenCI, designing training and delivering them to hundreds of healthcare professionals, teachers, colleges, Gardai and other bodies. She has presented to UN, PACE (Council of Europe) and numerous in the Oireachtas. During her time with TENI, she also undertook a MA in LIT, and went on to complete a PhD in TUS. Her thesis focused on loss and grief experienced by adult trans women and their families in the context of gender transition. Vanessa is a member of the Loss and Grief Research Group in TUS. In 2022, Vanessa developed Gendercare (www.gendercare.ie) and is currently enjoying the new challenge of running a consultancy firm, and honoured to be working in various aspects of gender identity. Vanessa is also a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Healthcare (WPATH) and it’s European version (EPATH).

Keynote Speaker Equitas Conference Friday 26th May – (Time tbc)

Title: Transforming intersectional gender injustices for mothers living in direct provision by creating spaces of resistance in Higher Education using Photo Voice.

Dr Méabh Savage works as a lecturer in the Department of Social Care and Early Childhood in the South East Technological University in Waterford. She has professional experience of working in the areas of women’s homelessness and domestic abuse. Her research interests focus specifically on issues relating to care and social justice among people who experience intersectional inequalities, including homeless mothers and asylum seeker and refugee mothers living in direct provision. Méabh is the inaugural recipient of the Vicky Phelan Honorary Chair in Equality and Access to Education for Women and Girls. She is using this honorary chair to engage in action research, using participatory and creative methods, to raise the voices of marginalised Mothers towards the development of inclusive education for citizenship. In doing so, this collaborative research aims to transform intersectional gender injustices by creating spaces of resistance in Higher Education using Photo Voice.
