Tuesday, 1 December 2015 marks the 60th anniversary since Rosa Parks defied the bus driver’s orders and refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger. Over the month of December WIT is holding an exhibition to mark the anniversary.
The joint initiative between WIT Libraries and Suirway Bus Company includes an installation of bus seats in the exhibition space on the top level of the Luke Wadding Library for visitors to engage with. Featuring an exhibit of 13 narratives, it depicts the history of a watershed moment within the history of the Southern States of America Civil Rights movement.
Visitors will also get the opportunity to watch the fascinating documentary ‘Justice Without Violence’ which examines the nonviolent protest to end bus segregation in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955/1956. This documentary has been kindly made available to the exhibition by Alabama Public Television.
This exhibition is being made available to all primary and secondary schools in the South East region for the calendar week 1-8 December, with three daily sessions at 10am, 12 noon and 2pm. Advanced booking is required.
It will then open to the public daily from 9-23 December. Advanced booking is essential to facilitate access.
