POETRY READINGS

Ten poets from across the country will read a poem that inspired them from the seminal anthology Soundings as well as two of their own poems. Joanne McCarthy will discuss the independent literary journal The Waxed Lemon of which she is editor and co-founder.

CREATIVE WORKSHOP 1: EDITING YOUR WORK

Facilitated by Mary Madec and Conall O’Cuinn, this workshop will focus on editing your poetry to allow your words to be read, understood and carried through to the printed page

Friday, 29 April, 930am-3.30pm

CREATIVE WORKSHOP 2: PUBLISHING YOUR WORK

This workshop, again facilitated by Mary Madec and Conall O'Cuinn will focus on teaching you the steps of reviewing, self-editing and collating your poems for a poetry publication. SOUNDINGS: THE NEXT GENERATION

On Friday afternoon the secondary and third level poetry prize winners will read their work and there will be an opportunity for intergenerational collaboration and dialogue among emerging and established poets.

Poetry competition

We are also hosting a poetry competition among primary, secondary and third level students in Waterford. Interested students are asked to write a poem on the theme 'Written in the Stars' in line with the Poetry Ireland theme for 2022. There will be first, second and third prizes in each category and a prize giving ceremony on Friday 29 April.

Background

This event is a cross community collaboration between WIT, Christchurch Cathedral and Modwords, with the explicit aim of encouraging participation and engagement in culture and fostering creativity for all generations in the south east. This unique poetry conference aims to develop an annual Waterford Poetry Ireland Festival to take place each year on Poetry Ireland Day with 10 poets from across the country reading from their work, and workshops led by award winning poets and facilitators Mary Madec and Conall O'Cúinn.

Line-up

The keynote speaker will be award-winning poet Mary Madec and the event will include poets from each corner of Ireland discussing their favourite poems from the anthology 'Soundings' and reading their own work as well as poetry workshops.

Mary Madec and Conall O'Cuinn have worked together for many years in a joint project called Pen2Paper Heart2Page to offer writing experiences to new writers and editing skills for experienced writers. Mary Madec is an award-winning poet whose third collection The Egret Lands With News From Other Parts was published by Salmon Poetry in 2019. Conall O'Cuinn is a qualified facilitator with a background in human development.
