A foreigner’s dialogue with the city is an attempt to understand and interact with Waterford as an unfamiliar environment. Drawing from observation and contrast the Mexican artist currently studying at WIT, Paola Livas, maps out her course through her time in Ireland. Places or objects that would go unnoticed come to be of greater interest to someone who’s here just temporarily and comes from a culturally contrasting background. The dialogue between an individual and a host city and reflections on identity and awareness of our surroundings are the major aspects to be noted in this project.
Fragmentation / Identification is a collaborative project between Monterrey based Mexican artist Adán Sánchez and Livas. It explores more deeply the complex perception of identity as an ongoing ever changing concept. It defies traditional means of one’s representation, deconstructs its unity and presents new ways of identification. It also reflects the pair’s discussions and deliberations and the intricate process of bringing both life experiences together into creating a collaborative piece whilst in two different continents.
The exhibition will display work on multiple media ranging from journal writing to photography, video and installation.
