Lecture title: Gender inequality is irrelevant to Higher Educational Institutions?
The reasons for a focus on gender equality are discussed as are the legitimating discourses (such as excellence, choice, biological essentialism, gender-neutral organisations etc) used the justify the status quo. Data on the position of women in higher education in general, and specifically in SETU will be presented. It is argued that gender operates at several different levels: the individual; the interactional; the organisational and the systemic, with particular attention paid to the organisational and the interactional. Institutional resistance to tackling gender inequality will be explored and the question as to what any individual can do will be discussed
The lecture will be followed by a Q and A session.
