The Higher Education Authority and Knowledge Transfer Ireland in 2017 commissioned aReview of Conflict of Interest. One of the recommendations arising from this review was that each Institute should develop a dedicated COI Policy (please see attached for your perusal). It was agreed by Executive Board to provide a workshop advising all staff of the Institute and the Institute School/functions on Conflicts and the Conflicts of Interest Policy.
This workshop will now take place on Wednesday 21 November at 3.45pm and will be repeated on Thursday 22 November at 10.30am in the Auditorium, Cork Road Campus. If you are unable to attend either of the workshops a video of the workshop will be available to view on the Institute website after the event.

Dr David McBeth BSc Hons, PhD
Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange Services, University of Strathclyde
Dr David McBeth has led the University of Strathclyde’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Services (“RKES”) since 2003. RKES is the professional service that supports all Strathclyde’s research and knowledge exchange business. Its activities span policy and strategy development; new business development for R&KE (including international), support for all R&KE grants and contracts; postgraduate research and commercialisation (including new venture creation and licensing). In the UK REF2014, Strathclyde was ranked 18th for research intensity and had the UK’s highest ranked Physics Department (according to Times Higher Education). Strathclyde was Times Higher Education “UK University of the Year” 2012/2013 and “Entrepreneurial University of the Year” 2013/2014. In the most recent Spin-outs UK Survey Strathclyde was joint 5th in the UK for companies formed in the last 10 years and is still in the UK Top 10 for cumulative IPR licence royalty income.
David served on the Scottish Funding Council’s Research & Knowledge Transfer Committee from 2003-2008. He was chair of AURIL (https://www.praxisauril.org.uk/ ) the UK’s largest institutional membership organisation for knowledge transfer offices in 2011 and 2012. David was also the only university sector member of the Scottish Government’s Programme Monitoring Committee for European Structural Funds for the 2008-2013 Programme. His special professional interests include: Intellectual Property Rights (“IPR”) Management; Licensing; New Company Formation & Investment; European Funding for R&KE; the role of the Public Sector in supporting innovation; and the economic impact of universities on regional economies. He has spoken regularly at International Conferences on University IPR and Conflict of Interest policies.
Prior to joining Strathclyde, David was employed for four years by Edinburgh Napier University, latterly as Director of its Research Office. In his career before joining the university sector in 1994, David was a Plant Manager for ICI plc in Merseyside, England. He has a Ph.D in Inorganic Chemistry and a First Class Honours Degree in Chemistry, both from the University of Glasgow.
