Dr Conor O'CarrollThe keynote address at Research Day 2013  entitled "Is it worth doing a PhD?" was delivered by Dr Conor O'Carroll, Research Director at the Irish Universities Association (IUA). 

As Research Director at the IUA, Dr O’Carroll is responsible for the coordination of research policy across all seven Irish universities. He represents Ireland on the FP7 Marie Curie (People) Programme, the Steering Group on Human Resources and Mobility and runs the EURAXESS Network in Ireland.

He is a physicist by training with a BSc., MSc. in Mathematical Physics and PhD in Physics from University College Dublin. During his research career he has been internationally mobile having done his doctoral research in Italy and worked for both academia and industry in Ireland, Scotland and Germany. He has worked in different sectors including petroleum engineering and nuclear technology (at the EC Institute for Transuranium Elements in Karlsruhe). He has extensive experience of policy formulation having worked in the European Commission’s DG Research and with the Irish science policy advisory agency Forfás. He has also deep experience of the operations of funding agencies through his time on the Marie Curie Programme, Enterprise Ireland funding schemes and Science Foundation Ireland. He has acts as a peer reviewer for the Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland, Department of Agriculture and Food, Science Foundation Ireland and the European Commission. He is a columnist with the national daily “Irish Times” on research policy issues.

He is currently chairing the European working group that is focusing on specific aspects of developing the European Research Area (ERA). He has led the development of the European Framework for Research Careers (EFRC) and the Principles for Innovative Doctoral Training (PIDT). The current work of the group is focusing on identifying training gaps for researchers across Europe.

He coordinates national projects on structured PhD programmes in the Irish universities. He leads a project analyzing national research performance through bibliometric analysis. His research interests are methods of doctoral training and the development and impact of national / European R&D policy.
