Outsider Leadership: Insights and Interviews from Business Leaders is a new book written by Dr Chris O’Riordan (WIT), Dr Felicity Kelliher (WIT), Professor Patrick C. Flood (DCU) and Professor Malcolm Higgs (Hull University Business School) and published by Palgrave Macmillan.

The book explores the concept of the outsider leader in business, a topic that is important both academically and professionally but that has received insufficient research coverage to date. In order to expand knowledge and understanding in this domain, the authors have interviewed seven leaders who are ‘outsiders’ in different ways.

Each leader’s story is presented as a separate in-depth chapter, as key emerging themes are identified for discussion and reflection, both within and across their stories. In this way, readers are able to further contemplate the meaning of the ‘outsider leader’ in business, what this entails for the individual and the organisation, benefits and challenges associated with outsider leadership, the importance of relationships, hiring strategies, the ‘hybrid’ leader and gender as an ‘outsider’ dimension.

The book will appeal to practitioners, leaders and students of leadership, and academics as the authors contribute further insights to be debated in an era where the ‘outsider’ has societally taken on increased prominence. Further information on the book and its chapters is available at here.
