Playwright Teresa Deevy, known to her friends and family as Tessa, lived and worked in Waterford and Dublin throughout a life devoted to writing plays and short stories. Described as a modest and unassuming person by those who knew her she was deeply religious, a fearless cyclist, a voracious reader, a lover of art and culture, a dramatist for radio, television and the theatre but first and foremost a woman who possessed a supremely sensitive ability to depict and critique the lived experiences of Irish women in the 1930s.

Performing the Region: Performing Women is a funded research project  undertaken by Dayna Killian under the co-supervision of Dr Kealy, Dr Richard Hayes and Dr Jacinta Byrne-Doran within the Department of Creative and Performing Arts.

A recipient of WIT’s PhD Scholarship, programme Dayna is currently a PhD candidate for the ‘Performing Women: Performing the Region’ project at WIT. This doctorate valuably seeks to recoup the work of women playwrights who wrote for the Abbey Theatre during the first 50 years of the 20th c and to contribute to the development of gender equality policy for the future of the Irish Theatre sector, a demand highlighted most recently and vigorously by the Waking the Feminists movement.
