The Centre for Newfoundland and Labrador Studies will hold a guest lecture by Prof Raymond Blake, University of Regina, Canada at 5.45pm on 26 April.
Professor Blake will deliver a lecture titled "The Search for Stability and Justice for a Small Island Community: Newfoundland in Canada".
Biography
Raymond B. Blake is Professor and Head of the Department of History at the University of Regina. He has published 20 books on Canadian and Newfoundland political history, with particular emphasis on citizenship and identity. He is currently at work on a history of how Canada’s prime ministers have articulated notions of citizenship through speech and rhetoric. He published in 2015 Lions and Jellyfish: Ottawa-Newfoundland Relations Since 1957 which own two national awards and his most recent books include Celebrating Canada, Volume 1, Holidays, National Days and the Crafting of Identities and a two volume History of Canada, Conflict and Compromise. He is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and in 2009-10 was Craig Dobbin Chair of Canadian Studies at University College Dublin. He was born in Pushthrough, a small fishing village in outport Newfoundland.
