Wellbeing is the state of being relatively healthy, happy and sane, so it's no surprise that researchers can find it hard to maintain. Pressure to achieve in research can be immense and it's all too easy to lock yourself away and engross yourself in your research. More and more we are being told by research funders of how researchers must publish (prolifically) in peer-reviewed journals, present at international conferences, organise their own conferences, be superb networkers, win funding and ideally gain professional experience in teaching, administration and project management. Staying a relatively balanced, productive, sane and sociable human being is no mean feat when you are a researcher, but it does help when you know you're not the only one and you don't have to go it alone.
As part of WIT’s HR Strategy for Researchers (HRS4Rs) initiative, we are holding a Research Wellbeing Walk, meeting at the WIT West Campus Greenway entrance, the walk will take approx. 45 minutes to the Railway tracks and back to the Arclabs, Hillside café for healthy refreshments. Dr Mark White, VP for Research, Innovation and Graduate Studies will give us an informal briefing on what’s been happening research wise across WIT and what WIT can do to help nurture researcher wellbeing.
The walk will enable you to escape from the daily grind, get some exercise, enjoy the beautiful countryside and meet other researchers. Regular informal social opportunities for researchers such as these provide you with a chance to network and to share the many potential wellbeing pitfalls of research, swap coping strategies and share information and solutions.
