In celebration of International Women's day, WIT staff and students are taking the bus to Dublin to attend the matinee performance of Edna O’Brien’s The Country Girls on Saturday 9 March 2019.

The bus will leave from WIT at 10.15am allowing time for lunch before the performance at 2pm. The bus will return to WIT at approximately 8pm that evening.

About The Country Girls

The Abbey has this to say: “The publication of The Country Girls caused outrage. It was banned in Ireland by the authorities and publicly burned by the clergy. Notoriety quickly turned to fame and this coming of age story of two young women in 1950s Ireland became a best-seller. Now, Edna O’Brien revisits her era-defining debut novel in a new stage adaptation.”

In fact the adaptation is not “new” to those of us in Waterford who are aware that Red Kettle Theatre Company premiered O’Brien’s adaptation of The Country Girls in 2011. For a review of that production (which also provides a useful overview of the themes of the play) click on Dr Una Kealy's review of the Red Kettle production in 2017 here.

Friday 8 March is International Women’s Day and WIT is keeping the celebrations going with a trip to see the work of one of Ireland's most interesting and controversial writers. For more Internatinoal Women's Day events, visit the events section of our site.
