The Department of Science is running it's Try Science event on Wednesday 11 December 2019. The morning will give students considering studying a lab science programme the opportunity to experience what it's like to study in a lab setting.

Prospective students can choose to do two lab sessions in the following areas:

  • Biology

  • Pharmaceutical Science

  • Food Science (incorporating biology & chemistry)

  • Physics

Each session lasts for two hours:

  • Session 1: 9.30am - 11.30am

  • Session 2: 11.30am - 1.30pm

Biology labs - an introduction to the biological sciences at WIT

Students can engage in fun, hands-on scientific activities in areas such as Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology and Diagnostics that will demonstrate important concepts behind the study of biological sciences at WIT. Student participation in these activities will be possible due to the small numbers booked for each ‘taster’ session.

Location: Laboratory B09/B10

Pharmaceutical Science labs - an introduction to Pharmaceutical Science at WIT

Students will prepare, purify and test Aspirin using common pharmaceutical methods. While you are participating in this hand-on pharmaceutical science laboratory session you will have the unique opportunity to work with the staff in the Department of Science, ask questions and discuss the various options available to you.

Location:  Laboratory B16

Food Science labs - an introduction to Food Science at WIT

Food Science incorpates elements of biology and chemistry. On the day, students will discover the array of pigments present in fruit using visual separation techniques. The students will get the opportunity to carry out experiments in our laboratories and to speak with the lecturers about the courses and options available for food science graduates.

Physics Labs - an introduction to Physics at WIT

Students will engage in hands-on activities in areas such as mechanics, light and sound that will demonstrate important physical principles and their use in technology. In addition, you will learn how to turn your mobile phone into a physics lab. You will also gain an appreciation of the wide variety of career options that are available to physics graduates.

(Prior to participating in this session you should download (and install) the phyphox app to your mobile phone. phyphox is available for free on Android and iOS.)
