Going to college can be a bit of a daunting experience and it definitely all happens really quickly.
You've been waiting around all summer for your results and suddenly you've accepted a college place and have to get ready to start in only a few weeks!
We've put together some information to help you get started, get ready to come to WIT, and we hope you find it useful.
Here's a few tips to get organised for college
-
It seems obvious, but once you've been offered a college place at WIT, make sure you accept it through the CAO
-
If you're unsure whether to commute or move into student ccommodation read advice from two former students.
-
If you are moving away from home, start organising your accommodation early. There are loads of options and you should spend time considering which one is right for you - and you'll enjoy our article on making the most of your home away from home.
-
It's probably a good idea to see the place before you commit. If you can't go yourself, get a parent or friend to go for you. Failing that, check it out online - perhaps there's been some chat about the accommodation or the area online
-
If you are travelling to college everyday, work out how you are going to get there. If you are coming by public transport, you should know the timetables so you can get to class on time. If you are travelling by car, parking in SETU Waterford is limited so check out car pool or other options. There's really good information on parking in our Transport section.
-
Work out your finances. It's a pain but it's very necessary. There's a rough guide to the cost of living while in college in the Money Matters section which should help you
-
If you think you will be eligible for a maintenance grant, start organising it as early as possible. Up-to-date information is available on the student finance site
-
Organise a bank account. AIB has a branch on our main campus and they do special student offers during registration
-
After you start your registration online make sure you attend Start SETU Waterford for on-campus orientation and the final step of registration. You will be sent information on this - usually a couple of days after the acceptances deadline -or keep an eye on the Registration section of this site.
