This information is for current students of WIT who wish to study abroad.

What is Erasmus+?

Erasmus+ is the EU's flagship education and training programme, enabling students to study and work abroad each year. Students can study for a period of 3-12 months at a university or higher education institute in another participating country or they can go on a Traineeship for a period of 2-12 months in another participating country.

Who can go on Erasmus+?
You are entitled to go on an Erasmus exchange if:

  • you are a WIT student and enrolled in a formal programme of study at higher education level leading to a degree or a diploma
  • you are a citizen of one the participating countries
  • you have completed at least the first year of your studies
  • you are awarded a place by your WIT Erasmus+ Academic Advisor.

What countries are involved?

There are a total of 33 countries taking part, including:

  • the Member States of the European Union
  • the three EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)

Which universities can I go to?

  • WIT must have an Inter-Institutional Agreement with the host Institute before a study exchange can take place
  • WIT has in excess of 115 active partnership
  • Traineeships do not need to have an Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement in place but they must sign up to the Erasmus+ Charter.

Are my grades recognised?
As a matter of principle, the time spent in the host country must be fully recognized by the home institution. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is the major instrument to facilitate academic recognition of periods of study in partner establishments. Recognition is given for the study period abroad by WIT. A Learning Agreement developed between you and your academic co-ordinator is a contract between you, WIT and your host college that indicates precisely what classes you will be taking abroad.

For Traineeship mobilities recognition is given for your traineeship abroad by WIT. Again, a Traineeship Learning Agreement developed between you, your academic co-ordinator and the host employer is a contract between you, WIT and your host employer, that indicates precisely what your tasks will be, throughout your traineeship.

Is there funding available?

Yes! All students taking part in the Erasmus+ Mobility exchange will receive an Erasmus+ grant. This is in addition to any other grants you may be in receipt of.

The Erasmus+ "mobility" grant is intended to help cover the cost of travelling and the difference in the cost of living, between Ireland and the host country.

Please note: If the length of your studies/traineeship changes, then so will your grant amount!

Can I work while I am Studying Abroad?

Yes, "any EU worker shall have the right to take up an activity as an employed person in any Member State irrespective of his/her place of residence under the same conditions as nationals". As an EU Citizen, you have the same rights and conditions as native students in your host EU country.

How do I Apply?

The online application for the Erasmus+ Mobility programmes opens up in January of the previous year of your planned Erasmus+ Mobility i.e. if you are planning to take part in the Erasmus+ programme in September 2021 – June 2022, you must submit your Application in January 2021, by the deadline given.

  • You will need your Student no. and password to access the WIT Self-Service Portal at https://studentssp.wit.ie/login/login.aspx?app=OLSSP to submit your application.
  • Under ‘Request Options’ please select ‘2021-22 Erasmus+ Mobility Exchange Application Request’, and complete the form. Please note: this will not be open until January 2021.

(Non-EU) International Exchange – Outgoing

WIT also has opportunities for students to take part in an International Exchange, outside of the EU. If you are interested is studying outside of the EU these are the exchanges for you! These are a great opportunity for students to study for a semester or a full academic year at some of the best universities outside Europe. Most students take part in exchanges during the 3rd year of their degree programme. WIT’s non-EU exchanges are academically competitive and allow students to demonstrate their initiative, flexibility, and willingness to adapt to new cultures – all of these skills are hugely transferrable to a work context after exchange, and are highly valued by employers!

If you wish to take part in an (Non-EU) International Exchange, please contact your Programme Leader who will be able to advise you of the options available to you, under your specific programme of study. We strongly encourage students thinking of going on non-EU exchange to investigate and research all of their options before choosing an exchange. Please be advised that there are costs involved for overseas flights, accommodation and day-to-day expenses.
