The Student Life and learning Team behind StartWIT Orientation have put together the following advice to help new students to 'mind your mind'

Are you missing home, struggling financially, and finding it hard to find your tribe in college, want to join a team, interested in volunteering? There are people here to help. Just Ask @ WIT.

Going to college is one of those really big life-changing events. It can simultaneously be exciting and unsettling, a dream come true and an overwhelming time. It is not unusual to feel dazed at times by all the adjustments you have to make when you first go to college or during your course. It is important to remember that you're certainly not alone in having those feelings.

You're not alone

For many of us, it’s the first time we’ve lived away from home and had full control over our own lives. The choices are plentiful, the responsibility baton is firmly in our hands, it’s up to us to create healthy habits. We can sometimes feel like a fish out of water; starting in a new place where we’re meeting new people and making new connections.

Talking, or merely thinking, about the things that make us feel vulnerable can feel a bit icky but we wanted to reassure you, that if you’re feeling out of sorts about this new chapter, you’re absolutely not alone. Most people will be experiencing similar concerns, insecurities and feeling a bit wobbly about it.

We all need a helping hand

When life gets a bit tricky reaching out for the help and support we need, and oh-so deserve, is a very important part of self-care. Nobody has their stuff together, all of the time, despite appearances to the contrary. We all need a helping hand, a leg-up, a shoulder to cry on and someone to lean on at differing times throughout our lives. You matter and you are worthy and deserving of support, all you need to do is ‘Just Ask’. Reach out to the Student Support team whatever the issue, big or small. Are you missing home, struggling financially, and finding it hard to find your tribe in college, want to join a team, interested in volunteering, there are people here to help. So Just Ask @ WIT.
